Learning on the internet

Has anyone heard of this guy or know anything about him.

I am interested in learning how to use hand tools. It doesn't seem to be a lot of money for his class but don't want to waste my money either. I work too hard for it but am anxious to learn. Going shopping with my wife tomorrow and plan on going to our local Woodcraft shop and looking at some of their DVDs. I would appreciate any input here. Thanks.

Dan

I think you should look at beginning books and you tube on the internet.

There's a ton of stuff on the internet and plenty of books from chapel hill on what you want to do.

Cheaper and a ton of info out there.

I can't say that I have heard much of this site Dan, though I have seen it before. It is an interesting site indeed. worth the time to check it out.

I think Woodcraft has some great DVD's, and they are definitely worth a look. And while your at it, as Mike said, Youtube has a wealth of knowledge from folks who want to share their woodworking knowledge. You can even go to our own VIDEO library that I have searched and downloaded videos here for folks to learn from. You can go to You Tube and punch in Lie Nielsen and you'll pull up a full series of cutting dovetails, sharpening chisels and planes, using a plane etc. You can go to Woodcraft website and they have a ton of free stuff too at the Woodcraft Magazine branch of the business, go to Woodcraft Magazine How to Videos, they have a huge inventory on how to use the tools they sale.

Whatever you do, have fun man, that's what it's all about, if you see a DVD collection at Woodcraft that looks like it will help you along nicely, buy it! If you see some good Youtube videos, watch them, and while your at it, let us know the ones you watched so we get them over here too.

Have a great time tomorrow and just have fun Dan, that's what it's all about my man!113.gif

Also Dan, you can shop one of our affiliates as well, they have great books and DVD's for the beginning woodworker as well as experienced woodworkers. And, when you make a purchase through our website, we will gain a 5 percent commission on the transaction, we then use the funds to keep this cool website live and to help the Wounded Warrior Project! Good Morning Dan,

I will be more than happy to help you out as you progress in the Art of Woodworking and your first free lesson is on you tube as follows;\

www.youtube.com/rjwamerica1 under segment on how to cut mortises by hand.

I also will help you privately if desired via email or on these forums and again it is all free. Since I will have been in woodworking 63 years come April 16, 2011 I think I can help you along.

One could use the internet, and look up Norm Abram's web site.    each week, they present a show from that woodworking show Norm had on PBS.   Say what you want about Norm, but he still gives a better show about HOW to not only make a project, but the how of using different tools to do the jobs.  One doesn't need a workshop as "loaded' as Norm's to do the jobs, but the skills he WILLING passes on will help even the "Newest" woodworker out there.

IF you want to learn about handtools and their uses, go look up Roy Underhill's shows on PBS.   In Roy's shop, there is NO electric, NONE.   All hand tools, and both their uses, and their history.   There are three seasons worth on the PBS site.   Pick some that sounds like what you want to learn about.    This past year, Roy even had on "The Schwarz" of Popular Wood Working, showing HOW to use handsaws.

This are two that I use, even now.    I'm STILL learning, even after almost 30 years of working wood.

Hi all

Just got back from Portland, Oregon. That's about a 60 mile drive one way for us. Went to Woodcraft and bought some tools. Wood River 8 piece set of chisels, E Galick & Son Saw 12 TPI for cutting dovetails, Groz CSF-10 Coping Saw and a Rob Cosman DVD on "Hand Cut Dovetails". Can't wait to watch it. I have one final coat of Polyurethane to put on the drawer fronts of my cabinet and I will be finished. I have a close friend that helped me all the way through this project. He had all the tools and gave up probably a half dozen or more Saturdays and don't know how many days after work to help me build this project. I have gotten hooked on woodworking and started buying tools. Because of how nice these cabinets look my wife has given me the go ahead to buy whatever I want providing I pay cash for it of course. She has at least 6 projects she wants me to take on for her. Life is good. I will post pictures as soon as I figure out how to get them off of my phone.

Thanks to all for their help and you will be hearing more from me. The folks at Woodcraft were outstanding and gave me lots of advice. I plan on buying my friend a gift certificate from their for all his help.
