to paint or not to paint

Featured Replies

I'm not sure where to post this but i'm sure you guys will tell me if i'm wrong. On my page i posted pics of my crescent universal woodworker and havent decided if i should clean it up real good or strip and repaint. It has old shipping info painted on the base, old to and from addresses.I was thinking it might be neat stuff to keep on there but also think the machine would look really good redone.Your opinion is valuable to me so input would be awesome, the second pic is at its new home the last two are at the old shop.

You've done a great job on the repainting why don't you trace the lettering then redo it and put it back on after it's done?

Hello Matthew. Just a beautiful machine. Love the pictures. I also like the radial arm saw you have. I remember seeing one like that from the Milwaukee boy's tech auction a few years back.

As far as painting, boy it your call. I was never one to redo my equipment to a level of someone's Like Shane's. He is so much better at that then me. I understand about wanting to keep the info you have. That is cool. Is that painted on the wood base or the metal base of one of the machine's? I guess if you want to restore the paint on the machines, you could leave a spot undone around the letters. Maybe do a nice pinstripe around them? Maybe Shane has a good idea about what to do. Calling Shane, Dan, anyone with some help for Matt?

I see no picture! WHOA Hoppened?

I'd really like to see this shipping info, I find that very interesting too Matt, my first impression is to do as Bob say and keep it. But I'd like to see that pic too.

Look at his page John, the pictures are there. bob3.gif

That was my thought also Mike.

+1 to you.

dragon1,i actually havent done anything but cleaned it up good, paint seems good. the bearing caps show a blueish gray and seems original but the rest of the unit is flat black and looks brushed on.i guess for some its about the machine and for some its about the history, for me its a little of both and would like to try to keep the history intact.

Matt..

Many times. the value of an antique will go down because of a "restoration."  I would just leave it like it is.

thank you larry,i thought of that also and was the original plan, the condition is good as it has always been inside.
