April 12, 201115 yr Good Morning Friends, You may remember the quarter sawn white oak coffee table I made for my show room window and now here are two pictures of a walnut table I am making for a friend in the same style. Â
April 12, 201115 yr Author The top picture is a dry fit of the walnut table where all joints fit snugly and you will note that I do not have the slats in yet or the legs cut to their proper length. The next picture is of the table top where i have applied a slur of Timber Mate to fill any voids in the top. I will sand it down to a nice smooth surface and then cut it to the proper length and width for staining and attaching it to the base. Thanks for looking.
April 12, 201115 yr Author Hi John,As usual I hand pick all of the pieces in order to get the best clear out of the wood possible and believe it or not this wood was actually about a number 2 common walnut however by choosing the better of the wood and cutting out the blemishes and knots I came up with what you see. The legs are three pieces of 3/4 stock glued up and planed down to 2" square. Then I cut the through mortises using my Jet mortising maching and the alignment was perfect so there was not out of alignment as I plunged the tool through the legs. I may make some videos to post on the forums for those interested. That is if I ever learn how to set up the darned camcorder.
April 12, 201115 yr Looks like that will be a nice table Ralph. Great looking walnut. Looking forward to the next set of pictures.
April 12, 201115 yr Author Hi Fellows,I worked this morning on the ends and installing the slats and fillers and now have both ends together and square. This after noon I'll work on the stretchers and install two mounting cleats to the inside of the ends to mount the top to. So far I am pleased with the way this thing is coming together. After that I will cut the corners out to go around the legs leaving a 1/8" clearance on the insides of the four legs and then rout a 1/8" chamfer all around the top of the table top. Then it will be time to mount it to the base frame. I will take some more PIPs this after noon.
