April 18, 201115 yr  Is there a simle way of making salt and pepper shakers, without buying grinders for $17? Why can't I just make the form, drill some holes in the top and install some kind of stopper in the bottom. If you have done something like this, please let me know the best way to procede. Thanks.
April 18, 201115 yr I've never made salt and pepper shakers but I believe you don't need grinders if you're using already ground pepper. The grinders are for using whole pepper corns and I think some salt come in chunks.
April 18, 201115 yr Author Is there a common size hole for pepper and salt? I know that the pepper is larger but don't know what size holes to drill.
April 18, 201115 yr No standard size hole I know of. When I go out to eat some shakers you can hardly get the salt out, others pour out too much. Ron Altier said: Is there a common size hole for pepper and salt? I know that the pepper is larger but don't know what size holes to drill.
April 18, 201115 yr Ron, bought a few of these from Woodcraft once.  http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2001159/2805/Tops-Shaker-Stainless-Steel-and-Plugs-Plastic.aspx  They might do what you are looking to do.  Â
April 19, 201115 yr If you use regular ground pepper and regular salt, you don't need the grinders. As far as the holes, take your drill index with you next time you go to the diner or to the store and check a few for the right size.
