April 20, 201115 yr Guys, I am pretty newbie and still learning with woodworking stuff.  I want to build coffee side table similar to Ikea Lack table. But instead of that, I will build with real wood and use necessary to make removable legs in case we move or something. I can't find good wood plans or video how to build it. I could try build my own by study this table. Also, does home depot or lowe's sell parts like special screw for legs and attach to each corner under table for legs. See this video so you can get the idea. Youtube link: (see second between .06 to .13) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9U_kyHYj9o Any suggestion? Thank you! gwlj
April 20, 201115 yr I'll surf on over to the Youtube video Grant, give me till tomorrow to reply, but the short answer is yes, yes and yes!I need to turn in soon, but I'll get with you tomorrow night buddy, and I am sure others will chime in before I do even, thanks for coming here to post your question Grant! Good stuff.John
April 20, 201115 yr Hello Grant,That is one of the easiest table made anywhere for all you need to do is to buy four metal flanges and screw then in the corners of the table top bottom side and insert lag screws which will go into your legs as you turn them down onto the lag bolt. Note, you will need to drill a recess in the end of the legs to go over the flange to allow you to engage the lag bolt.
April 20, 201115 yr Author Cool beans! I am looking at hanger bolts and I cant decide which size is best for this kind table? Suggest?
April 20, 201115 yr 5/16" Hanger bolts should be suffucent. I personally would drill out the leg and use a threaded insert to screw into. Hanger bolts attatch more like lag bolts into the wood and depending on the size of the leg could make it weaker as things get moved around for cleaning. It is a little more work but stronger solution IMHO . Just drill the hole to the proper size, add a little epoxy to the insert and your done. Just my opinion.Best WishesWayne
April 20, 201115 yr Hi Fellows,The only thing I have found out, is the fact that you need an insert to thread the 1/4 x 20 end into that will allow the bolts to extend further into the table top for enough strength to support the legs. Should you get the bolt cross threaded you are also in trouble. Otherwise they will work for a while depending on how much the table is moved for I have seen most folks just push the table out of the way rather than to pick it up to move it. This is when the legs and their mounting systems suffer and in some cases tend to make the connection weak.If I were to mount the legs in this style I would drill both into the legs and table top bottom a hole 1 1/2" in diameter 2" deep, then buy a 1 1/2" dowel and cut it 4" long and then glue it into both the top and the legs. You will find this a very strong and economical method to secure the legs to the table top. Allow it to cure over night to assure a good strong bond.
April 21, 201115 yr I have used them for table tops Robert. It allows the wood to move freely with out stressing anything out. Their design allows for a tight fit between the frame and top but allows the top to swell and contract with out harming or stressing the frame. After reading Ralph's post about using the dial rod I would have to agree. Considering the top was thick enough to go that deep with the hole. And yes I am feeling alot better since the injury. Thank you for asking. One thing I truely enjoy about this site is the variety of opinions and the people. This what makes a good site a great site. Opps, Didn't go up far enough. Like Ralph stated, people tend to push things out of the rather then pick them up and move them. That is why I was thinking about using the threaded insert instead of the lag bolt style just screwing into the wood.Best WishesWayneÂ
April 24, 201115 yr Author You guys have been helpful. I can't find those special screws at Lowe's. So, I will go ahead and order from this website this week.  I will post the picture when I finish with this project after I finish with another project. If you haven't look, I just uploaded some pics. Enjoy!
April 24, 201115 yr Grant, I was doing a table some time back that used those. Lowe's didn't have them, but Home Depot did if you have one close by,
April 24, 201115 yr Author Yeah, Home Depot is near my house, too. I will check it out first. Thanks!
April 26, 201115 yr Author Just found out that Rockler store is not far from my house. Do you think they have those special screws?
