April 22, 201115 yr Since everyone seems to like picture of things we make and while I'm doing work on home computer updating woodworking folders on this thing, I thought I just show of some of the project I done with a little history. First one is Deacon Bench I made back in 2001 from plan I got from Winfield. It was my first actual big furniture ( if that what you call it ) I made. At that time I did not have planer. It made out of Lowe's Whitewood Pine. I had to take a straight edge and a pencil to mark the high spot and use my hand belt sander to try get the board fairly flat for the 12" wide pieces. Made a template for the arm rest, back piece and apron. Rough cut with my Delta band saw and then attached the template and finish cutting on the router. Second one is Jelly cupboard from Winfield. Same Whitewood Pine for lumber. Basically same procedure.    Third one is oval table top for lady in 2007. 48" long x 36" long. She wanted to mount on an old metal frame of an foot pedal sewing machine. She this for her kids as work/ play table. Did it out of Poplar that I got from Lowe's. At that time I used some dowels and edge glue the boards and the made template 1/2 for just half of the table out of 1/4 plywood. Lay out each half of table with the template and rough cut with jig saw. Then attached the template and using pattern router bit to route the ends. Then came with round over bit to smooth out the sharp edges. The stain was Minwax Red Mahagony with 4 coats of Minwax Semi-Gloss finish. This project is the one I learn about doing a wash first then staining. After the wash, had to do about 5 coats of stain to achieve what she wanted. Have more I can show. Will do that later.  Wayne
April 22, 201115 yr Thanks for posting pictures of your work. I love pictures. You projects look great and I epically like the color of the table top. Tell me more about the finish schedule. Did you use any kind of blotch control product?
April 22, 201115 yr Wayne very nice work and it shows that you don't have to have a shop of large tools to make some very nice pieces. I love the table top. I would have never guessed poplar when I saw the color. You finish work is very good. Thanks for sharing those with us and the method you used in building the projects.
April 23, 201115 yr Author Richard Not sure what you mean by blotch control product. I didn't have any blotching problems on doing any of these project. The stains on the Deacon Bench and Jelly Cupboard were Minwax Early American. The table top was done in Red Mahogany. Each one I'll usually do at least 3 light coat of stain and let dry over night per coat. And at that time I was using Minwax Poly. Usually I'll do at least 3 coat letting each coat dry over night and light sanding with 150 grit between coats.  The table top was the one I was more worried on doing the finish and staining. Did sanding like crazy to achieve the smooth surface before staining it. The wash I used was the one Ralph said he used.  If I remember right it was 5 parts mineral spirit and 1 part stain. Apply the wash first and let dry over night. Had to apply about 5 coats of Red Mahogany to try to match the stain on the furniture at this lady home.  Wayne Richard McComas said:Thanks for posting pictures of your work.
