Downsizing and a lot of hand/eye coordination..

Featured Replies

Some years ago, WOOD published plans for a beautifully proportioned 8" Compote.

I don't have an 8" Wood Lathe.   I have a 6" Metal Lathe.   No wood turning tools, just a square turret with some turning bits in it.   So here's what I did.

Resized all the dimensions on the plan down to 75%.

Made it in three pieces with locationg dowels

Using the carriage wheel in one hand and the cross-slide wheel in the other and using hand/eye coordination, I shaped all three pieces.

Assembled, stained and finished it on the metal lathe.

Oh what fun that was..

Here's the image of it after completion.

looks nice Larry. it's amazing how woodworkers are such an adaptive bunch.

Wow, nice hand eye !!!!

Very nice Larry. I have heard turning wood on a metal lathe can cause cleanup problems. All the dust getting in the gears and such. Seeing as I don't own a metal lathe, is there anything special you need to do to protect the gears? bob

The drive and thread gears are enclosed in a metal housing.  The pully drive and main spindle are also in that enclosure.

The cross-slide acme screw is covered by a metal plate that I remove and clean out every so often.  Chips and dust are not a problem.  I use a chip brush to remove the waste as I turn.

I'm kinda looking for a 12" or 14" used wood lathe.

I see lots of cheap lathes on CL around here. Your in Iowa, I wonder if Big Dan Wyatt comes up with a nice delta that could make its way back to you? Might be worth dropping him a line. I will keep looking up here. bob

Thanks, Bob..

Our Craig's list is for the Cedar Rapids area.  I've been watching it for a while now.  No wood lathes.  I even posted a "wanted" ad on CL wqith no responses.

Where does "Big Dan Wyatt" live?

Hey Bob..

I found an image I took when I was turning a 6" bowl from Bubinga.  The bowl was in the final sanding stages and has no finish on it.

The purpose of this image is to show part of my Metal Lathe and some of the square turret I made from aluminum stock.

The locking handle was machined out of stainless steel bar stock, heated and bent to shape, then polished.

The rounded tool bit in the square turret is the hand/eye cutting and forming tool.

Bob..

Found another image of my Metal Lathe.  This time without anything on the # 2 Morse taper holder I made.  The square turret shows well.

Larry you are one very talented dude. I assume it might take you a bit longer with your metal lathe, but the end result is very nice.

Leo in AZ.

Thank you, Leo..

Yes, I am very fortunate to have certain skills to make things.  But, it's also an attitude.  Anyone can accomplish whatever they want to if they want to..

I owe ya a quarter..

Nice job Larry. Your workmanship is excellent. Nice bowl.

Dan lives in Missouri. But with the friends he has all over the country and the "rucker" opportunities around, anything is possible. "ruckers" are guys hauling machines from one spot to another. That was started on the owwm.org site. It is an amazing thing to see. The owwamos will be doing a bunch of that this weekend. Large machines trading places in parking lots. As Dan says, "hillbilly engineering at its best"

I see lathes when I am not looking for them, but now that I want to see something, nothing shows up.Might be a good idea to run the wanted ad  a few more times and be specific about what you want. You just never know. bob

Well done Larry!! looks great
