April 28, 201115 yr These are my first attempts at making salt and pepper shakers. I made some mistakes and improvised as I went. The caps are from a shaker set from the dollar store. I even made threads for the caps. My first try doing that and they came out OK.
April 28, 201115 yr Author Larry, That is the first thing I thought of too, but my wife had a simple answer. She said,"Thats easy, the holes for the pepper are larger." I looked and they are larger, but without my glasses I'd never see that. I was going to stamp an S and a P on the tops, but she didn't want me to.Larry Jenkins said: Very nice. How does one know which is the salt and which is the pepper? Larry
April 28, 201115 yr Author Charles, when I first started, I was going to drill holes in the top and use a stopper in the base for refills. Then I came up with an idea. I made the diameter of the top so that the lid  would fit loosely. I sprayed the inside of the lid with Pam nonsticking cooking spray. Then I applied 5 minute epoxy to the shaker and let it set with the lid on. I've never tried this before and was just hoping it would work. It did work, but I had a problem getting the lid off. Years ago I had multiple surgeries on my hands and no longer have the strength that I used too. (getting older don't help either) So I wrapped the lid with clothe and used channel locks to remove them. Of course the super cheap lids bent in and marked, but they did come off withour a bunch of effort. Maybe a stronger, younger man could have just twisted them off. Anyway, I went back to the dollar store and got two more for a buck and all is well.If you look closely, you can see a small void where there is no epoxy. If I do it again, I will do more twisting when I put the lid on the fresh epoxy. Charles Nicholls said:Very nice shakers Ron. Really like to know how the threads were done on these. I can imagine that they were probably still attached to the lathe for ease of turning the threads but beyond that i'm unclear
April 28, 201115 yr Those look great! I hope (to my doctors horror) the salt shaker has large holes in the top. LOL
