Bags or apron??

Featured Replies

So which do you use when you are working in the shop, bags (tool belt) or shop apron? Or do you use anything else?

I used to have a set/pair of the leather bags to wear when in the shop. You know a place to keep all of those things that you have to hunt for if you don't use something. It got to the point that it seemed like I was hanging them on something all the time.

I have switched to the shop apron. LOML likes it cause I don't have glue all over the front of all my shirts now.Grin.gif

It works out pretty good, I had the one I have made for me by a seamstress friend. Pockets for pencils, marking knife, tape measure, 6" ruler, candy bar and what ever else you need.

What do you use?

My wife is in the process of making me an apron. I set things down ( pencil,  tape etc. ) and it's always out of reach. Gets very frustrating at times.

Jeans and a sweat shirt.

I have been using an apron for years. Most of the saw dust is on the apron and not on my cloths.........so I clean easier before going in the house. Plus it gives me a place to whipe glue. Yup.........it will almost stand on its own now.

The apron I use now has a large pocket just below belt level that I keep my tape measure in. My son just happened to come in the shop one day and seen my reaching for my tape. He suggested that I do about that pocket..........grinning as he said it.Grin.gif

A jet black shop apron.  Black shows every piece of dust in the shop but it was free so I wear it.  I'm with Gary.  I keep a 12 foot tape in the front pocket and everyone knows to leave it alone.  It is accurate and I want it to stay that way.

Two nail bags on a belt, with suspenders.    It will get used IF there is a lot of outside work to do, like siding the house.  In the shop, everything is close at hand, so no belt is needed.   Use to have a couple blue aprons, just didn't get "compfy" in them.   Cleaning me up involves an air hose.

I like bags, the kind that come built-in on the Carhartt bibs. The downside is they recently quit making the Carhartt bibs with built-in bags, don't know how I'll survive when my current supply is exhausted.

I've used aprons. Tried some different ones, just never found any I really like. Pockets in front get loaded with sawdust and router shavings real bad. Pencils fall out when I bend over to pick up the tape that never stays where it is suppose to....Now I wear shirts and pants and they get glue all over them. I'm open to trying something new. Summer is coming and I wear shorts and t - shirts and glue and hairy legs is never a good thing.

I've got about 6 or more tool belts but when I'm in the shop, I don't use them.

I love having an apron in the shop. It keeps things handy and it keeps me a lot cleaner. When working in the shop I wear a Rockler cross-back denim apron. With the crossing straps it puts the weight on my shoulders and not on my neck.

When I work outdoors, I have a cordura tool belt with wide shoulder straps that I bought a number of years ago from Duluth Trading Company. It also distrubutes the weight across my shoulders and not my neck or my lower back. They don't carry this on anymore as Iooked online and didin't see it there.

After having 3 back surgeries with wacky nerves, I can't have much pressure on my neck or it gives me migraine headaches. Too much weight aorund my waist and hips and the legs get to hurting and tingling badly.

jeans and a pocket tee shirt, i reserve my bags for my day job - construction

Gene........thanks for the link to duluth tradin. I like that apron for it's tool holding, but it's to short for me. I really like the long one and I am going to order one of those. It looks like it has enough pockets to hold what I like to have at hand. Plus, it is long enough to keep the saw dust off.

I like that idea Allen. Right now the one I am using (apron) the weight is on my neck and I have noticed after several hours of work in the shop the annoying pain.

I got to look at the cross back one and give it a try.

Gene that is a good looking apron and I like the mess bottom pockets to allow at least some of the saw dust chips to pass on through.

And Hey I know about the belly problem also.Grin.gif

Like Paul, it's pocket tees and jeans. (tees without pockets are just shop rags) I've had a leather bag for 25 years.....sadly, it won't fit my belly any more. It's ok though, Try squares and triangles kept falling out.

Here's an apron I'd like to have. It also has the cross braces and look at the pockets!! http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/departments/tools-shop/shop-coat...

John,

I was a bit skeptical of the Rockler apron as I had used denim aprons before with mixed results and poor comfort. But once I tried it on in the store (they had one open for that purpose) and then put some stuff from the store shelves in the pockets (I did put all the stuff back when I was done....as far as they knowSmile.gif ) I really felt the difference. When this one wears out I will give the Duluth Trading Company one a try as I have never been disappointed with their products and I like the mesh concept to help with the sawdust accumulation.

For me it is normally a work shirt, pocket t and blue jeans. My tape is hung on the right front pocket of my jeans, pencils and such in the shirt pockets and my cell phone inside the t pocket. I have tried aprons but it had a neck strap and was very uncomfortable. The biggest problem I run into is moving around a piece and still having easy access to screws and such. If I could find a comfortable apron I would go back to it . RIght now I need the monies for shop upgraces, materials and the like.

Hey John

I don't like wearing either one

I can understand that Jim. There are times when I don't either, but I like the apron better than the bags.
