May 16, 201115 yr  FINALLY!    A birthday "present" to me.   About five hours out at the "Barn".    Milled down two of the 8/4 by 6" by 16' Red Cedar boards.   One more to go, tomorrow, maybe.   Started by cutting those LONG A@@ boards down to a more managable length.    About 30" was used.  From there, it was off to the tablesaw.  Mitersaw did the first cuts. I ripped the 6" wide planks in half, then stood them up on edge and ripped them again into 3/4" thick slabs. There was still some rough edges, so a re-set of the fence, and all were cleaned up.  Next, started milling up corner posts.  These were about 26" long, by just under 3" wide.   I had a pattern to make a foot cut-out, so I laid out the cuts.   Over to the Delta bandsaw, adjusted the tension on the blade and cut out some feet. Set these aside, for now. Rails, a bunch of them. again about 3" wide.  I needed six long rails, and six short rails. Once cut to length, a groove was dado-ed along one edge on some, and both edges on others. About 1/2" deep, by 1/4" wide.  Then tenons were "nibbled" on each end.    Back to those corner posts.  They also have a groove along one edge, same as above.  Now the tricky part.   There also is a groove on one "face" of four of the posts, to match a tongue on the other four posts.  When done, this will be how the corners are joined to make the case.  Yes, there are pictures on the way.   Just getting on the computer when I get down here. Oh yes, also glued up a top for this Blanket chest.   Chest will also have a drawer in the bottom half. Frame and panel sides, with the drawer front milled to match the panels.  Should be FUN.
May 16, 201115 yr Author Ah yes, pictures...A test fit of the corner posts, and a few rails.    Now you see what the feet look like.
May 16, 201115 yr Author Another view... A close-up of those feet, showing the T&G joint used. The center rail has grooves on both edges, to hold the panels I've yet to glue up (tomorrow, I hope)
May 16, 201115 yr Author And that top. Yes the is glue showing, I will take that off when I level the top's surfaceWild a@@ grain, that Cedar has. Lots of sap wood, but that gives a bit more interesting look. Now a look at what all this came from..
May 16, 201115 yr Steve that is looking really good, your right, that grain is way cool, how your panels going to be made, raised?
May 16, 201115 yr I think you are already having fun. That should be one nice project for yourself. We need that once in a while. Thanks for sharing. May 16, 201115 yr Author  Panels are "planned" to be Shaker Style" in that a rabbet is run around the outside edges, then a bevel cut of about 5-10 degrees is cut on the raised part.    All done on the tablesaw.  That in itself aught to produce a story..  I've got the end panels ready to glue up (today?) just need to mill the last big plank for the rest of the stuff.    I also need a web-frame/ guide for the drawer.  Might be two drawers, as nothing is set in stone right now.   I've got some 3/4 plywood for the storage area's bottom.   Drawer bottoms are another matter... Drawer sides MIGHT be ceadr, or just pine, uncertain as of yet.  Brain cells are working a bit slow, nowadays...
May 16, 201115 yr Author I went out to the shop today. Got a few more parts milled up. The drawer will now be two drawers. So a divider was needed. Milled those up. Had to chop a mortise in one rail, to hold the divider in the bottom rail. While doing the chopping, the Grandsons came in. Said that Dad had passed away a little while ago. Tried to finish some other test fits, everything just fell apart as I was setting the piece on the floor. I just left them there, and went home. I find out the details tomrrow at 1000 in the morning, at the funeral home. Graveside services to be held. That is what he wanted.
May 16, 201115 yr SteveThis is looking really great. Love the patterns and the book matched pair. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.WayneÂ
May 17, 201115 yr Author After checking on Mom to see how she was doing, I motored back to the shop.  Milled that last plank down into something I could use.  Then I made a few more glue_ups of some panels.  Then I went back home. Got an appointment in the morning, got to get cleaned up and "presentable" to go see the Funeral Home guy. Then call Plasti-pak, and inform them. Guess i won't be running them machines this week.
