Building a Rocker With Hal Taylor or Charles Brock

Featured Replies

I received a really cool email detailing a great class for up and coming chair builders, I have always been interested in Charles Brocks class for building this classic chair, I also have purchased the manual to build a chair from Hal Taylor. Having built my first chair, and at this time building two more simultaneously from the Hal Taylor design, I can only say, with a mediocre of woodworking skills anyone with Hals plans can do it, it's fun, it's very rewarding and you'll have a piece of furniture that will last a lifetime.

I can personally vouch for Hal Taylors book and templates, and he is always there to assist you via phone call or email when and if you get in a jamb. I receive zero compensation for reccomending Hal's class, I just wanted to pass on a wonderful experience I had building Hal Taylors chairs. I know there are a few guys on here who have expressed a desire to build, I just wanted to give you a little push if you needed one. Anyone can build a chair!

I want to check out the Brock chair plans and templates and see how they are, I love his chair and I am anxious to build a Brock chair and add his templates to my inventory of chair templates I started with Hal Taylor. But first I need to finish the two Taylor chairs I have in progress now.

John...I'm really thinking about it. Perhaps this fall. Thanks for the links. I guess I should start doing my homework soon. Do you need to build in advance any special forms for bending wood? What kind and approx, how many type of clamps is good for a start?

Ace! Sorry I missed your reply.

Home work is good.

Do not worry about building any forms in advance, as Hal Taylor will show you step by step how to build any forms you need. Beware though, I found that the forms were about 1/4 of the project on my first chair. My second and third chairs progressed very quickly since my forms were already built.

About 20 8" C Clamps would be a good start, I don't have that many, I have just a few but I have about 30 Besseys that I have been able to make work, I do wish I had more C's though, you get a lot of torque with the C Clamps. And you need to put all you got into the tightening of the lams to the forms. You can't have enough pressure as far as I am concerned.

Maybe 6 quick release clamps in the 12" and 6" range would be nice. Those make great third hand help me's.

What kind and how many clamps do you have ACE?

John...

I have 5  46" k body bessey.

5 12" F body bessey

8  6" f style pony bar clamps

10 or so of the pony pipe clamps various length's

Various "C" clamps

5 quick release

From what little I knew. Like you stated, C clamps are preferred for clamping pressure.

I have seen many posts on this and photos to go along. I must admit that is sooooooooooo inviting to attempt this. I was looking around some site earlier and seen the ads for Hal's books, dvd's and patterns. There was also a reference for Sam Maloof's work there too. I have been interested in this for a while, so I am going to take the plunge. All I want to know is what is the best wood for this project. Who kows maybe I will make a chair that looks as good as John's.

Hey John, your on the clock buddy! I too would like to build one. The Hal Taylor looks nicer to me. Not as spindly looking.
