What thickness glass

Featured Replies

Well, contrary to suggestions, I am going to install a glass door into my Challenge Coin Display case. I am thinking of the dust factor and the pain in the butt it would be to remove all the coins then dust and to replace them all again. So, my question, what thickness glass is a good choice? I am ordering tempered glass, I have a choice of 1/8" through 1/2", I am thinking 3/16th thick? The glass will be 15" wide by 28" tall. I was surprised that a mail order tempered piece of 1/4" is only about 20 bucks.

Thanks guys.

Whoops! Shipping is 25 bucks! Gotta find someplace closer, but I need tempered, the recipient has kids in the house.

1/8" should be fine.

My frame is 1.25 inches wide by 7/8th thick Lew, does that make a difference? And the mitered corners will have exposed splines. Do you still think the frame will rack or sag?

Why tempered glass John?  I was going to put 1/8" tempered glass in my curio but the pro at the glass shop said it was overkill.

Ya know Ron, I was thinking along those lines too. I understand the kids thing and safety first. This is a good question, is there a better type of glass just not tempered? Or is regular glass from the hardware good enough?

The glass at Lowes is 2.5 MM not 1/8" so be careful.  I'd go to a glass distributor.

Glass for windows is thinner. I use 1/8" double strength glass in all my hutches and cupboards. Never had an issue. That is double what window glass is and still very reasonable.

Kids Ron, but it might be over kill.

That's a wonderful idea Lew, I am going to do just that. It's a good design change and lend more strength to the frame, good suggestion.

Not to encourage a design change but would a mitered saddle joint be stronger- if the weight turns out to be an issue.

Gene, I just got a thing against Lexan, I think it's great in alot of applications, but in some not so great. Also, after years of cleaning, the lexan fogs from micro scratches. Thanks Gene.

How about Lexan?

1/8 would be fine. Question being is are you going to add something to make sure it is dust free? You may want to consider something like a very small matching strip of the same as the backing to insure it is dust free, One the Glass is closed the backing would mate together isuring a dust free eviroment for the treasures held with in.

thanks Wayne, are you talking about a strip of material the same as the back, a strip between the door and the cabinet face?
