Summer Time: Cooling Your Shop

Featured Replies

Summertime is here.  In our area today, it was 95. Wondering how you guys/gals cool your shops.  I would especially like to hear from you that have more imagination than funds!!

I do.  Window A/C and worth every penny

I have a 24x32 shop Randall and I have a window air conditioner, 220v. I don't run it much but I do use it on weekends. Today was about the same here and had three fans going and the windows and doors open. I did close in the ceiling and added insulation to the attic part and that helps. I also put in attic vents.

It was in the 80's here and my shop is 72. It was closed up all weekend while I was gone to a show. It will stay closed up today and it will stay real nice while I work in there. Insulation is the best thing I can do. I have a big shop and sliding windows, so window air conditioning is out. Just keeping it closed will keep it decent for almost a week. The weather here is cooling down later this week and then I can open windows and doors.

Mine is a basement shop & stays pretty much the same year round.

Need a flannel shirt in the winter, but mostly pretty comfortable.

Another way to cool it would be to move the shop to Montana. We might get up to the high 60's this week. First time since Oct.

I am very fortunate.

My 594 square feet shop is located in the lower level of our walkout home, and shares the home's HVAC system.

We had the house built with the shop in mind, so the HVAC system was sizes accordingly.

Nice and cool in the Summer and the humidity is well controlled.

Grainger's catalog has a section in it that allows you to "size" an HVAC system based on your Shop size.

I would be tempted but I doubt I could sell that idea to the boss lady.  She does not like cold weather.

I am just east of St Louis Mo I have a 30x50 metal pole barn that stays fairly cool with a old atic fan from craigs list and two open doors but I have the walls and roof insulated to the hilt R18 in the roof R16 inthe walls that helps a lot.

I buried 64 ft of 6 inch pvc in the ground at 3 ft deep and ran a fan blowing in and a fan blowing out.

Free 50 degree airconditioning and all it costs to run is less electricity than a flashlight uses.

For the past 10 years it has been fans, open windows with intermittent showers of sweat. This year we have already weathered the same storm of high humidity and grumpy sweat logged Mike. However come 20 June I will have a standalone HVAC system in my shop. The final piece of the original plan. My lovely wife said she will never see me again ....

Basement shop here....stays about the same temp year round....summer can get a little cool though, have to wear long pants in the shop. 24.gif

Well Randall, I'm totally ignorant on shop cooling.  Never had much use for it. Grin.gif

Mikey..

Solid or perforated?  Reverse "Ground water heat pump!"

Thank you guys for the suggestions.  Not sure why I never considered installing attic vents.  I have only installed a couple hundred in roofs over the years, must have been having a senior moment or something.

Dragon, going to do a little more research on your idea.

Dragon, I would like more information too. Sounds like a great idea.
