June 9, 201115 yr I have built about 12 of these boxes through the last few years for our company survey trucks. And I've been at it again today, the boss sent me home and told me to build a box! So, here are some progress shots of our truck boxes. In the lower left there will be a drawer for the lath. The upper cubbies are for the tripods, and the lower right cubbies are for digging tools and misc. There will be some upper tubes that hold our "Survey Crew" signs, and cradles that hold our rods. I been on this one since this morning. I forgot how nice it is to just work with sheet goods and a pocket full of galvanized screws and glue. It's brain free work, just fun to cut straight lines again. Â A big stack of ply wood soon to be a big ol box. cross cutting the sheets to 6' in length, the bed of the truck is 8' but we want 2 in the clear for GPS equipment. Dados cut and sides screwed in Taking shape! Almost there! And I'm done for the day! I will finish the box tomorrow, I need to go into work first in the morning and take care of some business, then I'll drive the new company truck back home tomorrow morning, build the drawer, and put some finishing touches on the box and I'll post the final pics tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for looking guys! Â
June 9, 201115 yr Interesting John. You get to use your work daily I assume. The big question is do you paid for the woodworking or do you get your regular hourly rate? LOL. Looking forward to the finished pics. Nice to have some fun work isn't it? Wayne God Bless our Troops and Protect them.
June 9, 201115 yr Ah , the less glamorous side of wood working that fits form and function . Did you make jigs up along the way for future use ? A good post - please show the drawer details . Thanks
June 9, 201115 yr Nice work, especially when it's on their dime.Know of any good ways to find corner pins?Larry
June 9, 201115 yr Great post John. Very nice box. So is that a back garage door to the shop? Hmmm, cross ventilation. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworks

June 9, 201115 yr Author Thanks Rob, yep, not glamorous at all. To tell you the truth, I feel right at home banging cabinets together, cuttin dados and making things square. I did that for years. I made this box just like I made the others, out of my head. No jigs, well I take that back, I use my dado straight edge for my PC 7518 Router. It's a 6' long straight edge and guide I made specifically for the PC and a 3/4 dado bit. I have had it forever. I will show the details you want Rob, but as you say, it taing gonna be glamorous, clean yes, but nothing fancy, rob durfos said: Ah , the less glamorous side of wood working that fits form and function . June 9, 201115 yr Author Thanks John, yep, that is a single car garage door that opens to our backyard. We have a 3 car garage that makes up my/our shop, woodworking for me and pottery for the misses. The original idea was to be able to pull through a boat or whatnot and park it on the slab the box is setting on. John Moody said: Great post John. Very nice box. June 9, 201115 yr I'm impressed with the box but I'm also impressed that Mr Moody picked up that you have two garage doors. Only in California could you get away with that. Here in the flyover zone you'd never heat a garage with 2 doors even if they are insulated. June 10, 201115 yr Author Here is the finished box folks. Rob, I hope the drawer layout is what you were interested in. I tried to get some good pics of the drawer. The ABS tubes on the left are for the "Survey Crew" signs, they are rolled up and shoved into the tubes. The cradles to the right of the two abs tubes are for rods, the abs to the right of that is for misc rods. The middle cubbies are for tripods, metal detectors, etc, the lower two cubbies are for digging implements and asphalt breaker bars. The roll out drawer is for our 2' and 4' lath. We keep our hubs in one of the side cabs with the paint. The space between the tail gate and the box is for our GPS equipment, and the occasional use of a Whacker brand type of gas powered jack hammer we use to dig up center line road monuments. So there ya have it folks! 1 each survey box! Thanks for looking. Oh yeah! Between the two ABS tubes on the left we slide in our sign standards. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
