June 24, 201115 yr Ok, I have been plugging away on things in between various errands and other obligations. So here is an update on the progress.  First of all, here is a photo of my old vanity which is "Builder Standard Junk". You can see that I have already pulled out the old vanity and completed the tile underneath it as I had originally tiled up to the vanity and then re-installed the vanity until I get everything else done so the bath is usable. I have not done the grout yet but will do that after I get done before I put in the base trim.   Here is a photo of the vanity that my wife liked online which I am using a template and tweaking it to match our needs and space.   Here is the primary frame I completed a day or so ago. Measurments are 30"w x 32"h x 20"d all out of solid 3/4" red oak and 1/4"red oak ply for the sides and door panels.   Here are a couple of pictures of the completed frame that I got done today all sanded and ready to apply finish.    The shelves are made using slats as opposed to a single solid piece so that it can be removed if necessary to deal with any plumbing issues down the road. Currently none of the slats have been attached as they will be finished seperately and will be installed when I put the vanity in the bathroom.  All that is left now is to make the doors, but I need to track down the right hardware before I make the doors. My local sources of higher quality hardware cut back their inventory so I have to do some online research to find what I want. I will be making the top out of wood and make an attached backsplash incorporating some A&C type tiles. But I can't make the top until we have the vessel sink and the faucet in hand so I can deal with the exact placement. Once I get all the other pieces into the mix I will post some final photos.
June 24, 201115 yr Wow!! Awesome Allen! Great job. Are you installing one of those sinks that sit on top of the counter? I can see the quality pouring out of that build Allen, The old builders sink is exactly like ours we currently have, our home was built in 91. howabout yours? John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
June 24, 201115 yr Man that is awesome. You have really been busy. I love the look of that new vanity. That is going to be really nice. Is the new tile what is picture above or are you doing something different with the tile? Keep those great pictures coming.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworks
June 24, 201115 yr Author John and John, Â We bought our home new and got to watch it being built moving in in June, 2001. But those "Builder Standard" vanities are still the same over the past 20+ years. Â The tile on the floor in the bath is a porceline tile by Dal Tile that I installed in all of our kitchen, family room, hall and half bath. It was done in a "Hop Scotch" pattern using 12" and 6" tiles with variations of 4 different colors ranging from a dark brown to tan to redish brown. It goes real well with A&C, Mission and Southwest styles and furnishings which is what our family room all is. What I want to do in the backsplash is to get some 6" or 8" A&C design accent tiles to set off the vanity a bit.I have some ideas but I need to get to a tile place to make some decisions. Here is a photo of the type of vessel/bowl/sink that we will be installing and it will sit on top of the counter top. It is made out of hammered copper and is 14" in diameter and about 6" deep. We will be ordering it from Amazon for about $100 which is far better than the $300+ that they sell retail out here in our neck of the woods. We now just have to decide on the faucet as we are limited due to the add height of the sink and I may have to make a pedestal to attach to the vanity top for the faucet to be mounted on. So I just gotta get all the parts together before I can move forward. Â Â Here is a photo of what I am thinking about for a faucet design. We won't be getting this exact one but it is one I just pulled up quickly off the Delta Faucet site to give you an idea. We want to go with a single hole design as it will take up less space but it will depend on what we can find and the price as they get a tad expensive and we want to get it closer to the color of the vessel. Â Â
June 24, 201115 yr I really like the sink and faucet. That type faucet should go really well with what you are doing. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworks
June 24, 201115 yr Awesome pics! Improving a vanity is one of the many things we woodworkers can do around the house that is actually appreciated. I am scheduled to make one for my mom out of cherry in the next couple of weeks. I will be sure to post pics. Again, great job!
June 25, 201115 yr Author Last night my wife found and purchased the vessel faucet on e-bay for $75 (beats the daylights out of paying locally and online from $250-$300). It is a discontinued model made by Moen new in the box so it is good quality. Not as flashy as some of the other ones I was looking at, but saving $200 makes up for it.   Yesterday my wife and I went out and looked for accent tile for the backsplash and found the ones that we wanted. I contacted the manufacturers showroom and was able to order direct from them as opposed to buying through a distributor for more money. They happend to be having a sale going through Monday so I was able to get them for an additional 30% off. The tiles are hand painted Mexican style accent tiles done in muted colors which will go nicely with the A&C style as well as tie into our overall Mission/Southwest/A&C style and designs in our downstairs. I will be putting in five 6"x6" tiles of the same design framing them into the backsplash. The place we got the tiles from is Classic Tile and Mosaic and the specific tile is FD-148 Â
June 26, 201115 yr Wow, I love that tile. Very nice and the colors should really add to what you are doing. Can't wait to see them in place. I also like the choice of faucet. With the copper vessel that should give it a very special feel.  John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworks
June 26, 201115 yr Author I also ordered my door pulls today from a specialy supplier online "HERE". Not bad on the pricing at $10 each but just what I was looking for. They had a lot of really nice designs for A&C, Mission, Southwest etc. so I bookmarked them in my "Favorites" for future projects.
