Dovetail Saws

Featured Replies

I own two dedicated dovetail saws (one for each hand) that I absolutley love. A straight handle 15ppi rip Lie-Neilsen and a Thin-Plate Lie-Neilsen also with 15ppi. I love the fit and finish of both and the thin kerf saw plates are awesome. I find that the more I saw, the more I want a thinner plate. I am interested to know what kinds of dovetail saws that everyone else owns and how they like them. I have heard good things about the Veritas and Gramercy versions but have never used one. Let me and everyone else know what you are making saw dust with these days.

I use some old disstons. They work nice and were very inexpensive. Learning to file your saws is not real hard.

I'm still learning to hand cut dove tails. I purchased a Japanese style (pull saw). It has a very thin blade and, for me, it provides great control.

I completely forgot about eastern saws. Wow. My first woodworking saw was a Japanese dozuki and I liked it alot. Using it prompted me to get the LN straight handle saw (only $75). I agree with you. Japanese saws are excellent to use and very sharp.

I have and old Disston backsaw that I bought at a yard sale. After I sharpened it, it worked well but the handle didnt feel quite right. I still have it and use it as an all purpose saw and have been letting a kid in my neighborhood practice with it.

I have an old Jackson by Disston Dovetail saw. 10" blade, open handle and 10 tpi.

Sharpened it up and it works good.

I have a Dozuki that I bought early on for a sharp inexpensive saw and used it for more than it was made for (cutting tennons in 2 x 4s). Then I got a western saw and the Dozuki stays in the saw till most of the time.

In the picture is the saw and some practice cuts.ning-saw001-44108-58.jpg?width=721
