Favorite Brand of Chisels

Featured Replies

Just wanting to see what brands of wood chisels you guys like and recommend.  I have a set of Ananti (spelling??) that I like.  Only complaints is that the steel is a little hard and brittle.

As far as fit and finish, Lie-Neilsen chisels are perfect. They arrive lapped flat and sharp. I use mine everyday for almost everything.

When Stanley re-introduced the 750 series earlier this year, I bought a set of 8. They are smaller and lighter than the LN and some of them required a bit of work to lap flat. They are a good choice for under $300.

The finest chisel I own is a Blue Spruce 1/2" dovetail chisel. I reserve it for my finest dovetail and paring. They are a tad expensive though.

I'm a fan of the old buck bros. chisels. Swan, winstead, witherby, underhill all made great chisels. I always look for the old socket chisels. Make a new handle and you are good to go. I also have some old greenlees with green plastic handles. They hold an excellent edge.

I have a good set of Two Cherries, but I always find myself reaching for my plastic handle Marples. Not the Irwin Marples, but the Blue Marples from Sheffield. I bought em about 18 years ago and they just keep trucking. Solid, thick, and they hold an edge forever.

I don't have a really good set. As a matter of fact, mine are just some mix and match. I have hinted at holidays, birthdays and father's day for a really good set, but I don't think they are hearing me.

John,

A good set is a must in my eyes. Stop hinting and get some nice chisels! The new Stanley 750 series are great and dont require too much work. Just keep em sharp and slice away!

ning-009-44086-12.jpg?width=721Here is most of mine.    Some Stanleys, a Worth, a Fuller ( that black one one the end) and somewhere a PEXTO is hiding.    I've also got a few "Made in China" ones.    I just sharpen what I have, and use them.

I've got a few everlasts, some 750's, a set of old Marples (circa 1950) and a few GI Mix chisels, a bunch of really old no name-no handle chisels and a few of the Sorby's.

I've also got a bunch of craftsman, stanley, marples, and others that are expendable and I use them on 2x4's for electrical work.

I have a set of Narex from Lee Valley. They work pretty good and seem to hold an edge well.

Speaking of Lee Valley they have free shipping until the 11th of July on orders over $40.
