Friday, July 4th Weekend - What's on Your Agenda?

Featured Replies

July the 4th Weekend. Stirs up thoughts of Fireworks, BBQ, homemade ice cream, picnics and lazy afternoons.

What a great weekend to celebrate our Independence, our Freedom and this great country.

So tonight I start off the weekend with First Friday craft show here in Florence, Alabama. I have been busy getting my inventory back so would have enough to show. Finished eleven cutting boards last night so I will be setup this evening on the sidewalk in downtown. Suppose to be 100 degrees here this afternoon, so it should be a hot evening.

I did get some help sanding cutting boards last night from my oldest granddaughter. She is interested in helping in the shop and learning about woodworking.

Got my conveyor belt to replace the broken one on my Drum Sander so Saturday morning will start off by putting the drum sander back together with new belt and bearings.

Got to glue up another panel to replace the one that blew out on the cedar chest and get it put together. I have a request for this chest already.

Will start planing some rough lumber down to build a kitchen table for my wife. She has been moved down the list long enough, so this is moving quickly up list. Got to make her happy.

This weekend will began a week of vacation for me, so I am planning on several projects and as I usually do, I will have more projects that time.

So what about you ladies and gentlemen of the woodworking community, what is on your agenda this 4th of July weekend?

Deliver the file cabinet this morning and then work on some corner cupboards and a chimney cupboard. Hot here today too. Almost a 100. Real warm for us north folks.

Well, since my wife is off today we will be heading out in a few minutes for breakfast and then take a drive down to Laguna Beach to walk around and look at the shops and such. Saturday I do not know yet as I am hoping to have my vessel sink in today so I can start working on the top of my vanity. Sunday we have church and will be having lunch with some friends most likely. Monday we will have lunch with my son and his wife and then my wife and I will be heading down to Anaheim To see the Angles play the Detroit Tigers and watch the fireworks in the sky afterwards. I have never been a big fireworks fan, but my wife loves them. So I went online and bought the tickets from a site that allows season ticket holders to sell their tickets. I got us in the View Level Section 425 Row A so we will be right on the front rail between Home Plate and 1st Base and the perfect place to see the fireworks over the left field wall.

Going to Omaha Nebraska Sat. back on Sunday evening. Looking for Handtools at a couple of antique places.

Watching fireworks from my backyard Monday. Hope to get some work done on a small cabinet I'm building to.

Coffee table.     I have to work the next four nights, so  I worked today on that coffee table.   First coat of poly is drying right now..

Well I made it through the First Friday event. Sold several items last night. Was a good night, not as good as the last two, but still a very productive night. Lots of people walking back and stopping to talk. May have picked up a couple of jobs there last night. Suppose to meet with a couple to build a fire place mantel and another lady to built a chess board table for a custom chess set she made out of ceramic. Also picked up and order for a large cutting board, edge grain style, 24" w x 37" long.

So I am about to head to the shop and get my drum sander back together. Got a little yard work to do today also.

Have a great day folks and post those projects you are working on. You never know, it might give some of us a good idea.

Right now it's a disaster area.

Finished up redoing the bathroom and then I had my cataract fixed this week!!

Until it heals, I have to stay away from dust and lifting. What a difference. I can look over my glasses and SEE.

Even using Mike's idea about using blue tape to mark cut lines I was having a hard time.

Watch out though. When I get my new glasses I plan to make up for lost time

Thanks for asking John! I am off till next Tuesday, yippeeee!

I finally got the clock case/jewelry box finished and delivered yesterday, and today we are taking it easy, just gotta cut the grass and we are having a really laid back 4th, not much goin on. I need to clean the shop up too.

I am going to somehow convert the third car portion of our garage for mama to have a space to call her own. I will start a discussion on this soon, I will be looking for ideas on how to do this on a shoestring budget.

Happy 4th all!

Well I hope with everything else you have going on, you find a little time to visit and introduce yourself to your tool family in the shop.

I got a little time this afternoon after church do adjust the drum sander and get the snipe out. Making a very smooth and quite sand now.

Also finished cutting the dovetails for the next cedar chest and got it on the bench dry fit.

As I was getting ready to dry fit the chest though, my assembly bench was covered with pipe clamps from the cutting boards I have been working on. So I got a little distracted and built a tray to fit under my assembly table to hold my pipe clamps.

ning-100-3934-43895-42.jpg?width=721I took a board, marked off the distance I needed between clamps, drilled a 7/8" hole, ripped it in half and put it together with a bottom. Bolted it to the inside of the legs on the table, and now I have all of my pipe clamps right at my reach when working on cutting boards or whatever.

After I got that finished and the clamps out of the way, then I did the dry fit on the chest.

Hope you are getting some shop time in this weekend.

Happy 4th of July to all of you...

Yesterday I didn't get nothing done in the shop. Today after church my son and his wife came over as well as my daughter and a few other of their friends and we had lunch together. After the kids all left I went out to the shop and got to work on the vanity top. I did it in 3 pieces and it was just a bit too wide for me to do all 3 using my 4 way clamps, so I did 2 pieces and then went inside to watch the UFC 132 Pay Per View that my son recorded for me and I watched it on my computer. Then I headed back out to the shop and glued on the 3rd piece. so tomorrow I will get it all sanded down and cut to size. it is currently 25.5" x 36" in 3/4" red oak.

been working on turning my 12 x 30 cold storage addition on my shop into extra shop space. insulating, sheeting, building lumber racks, stacking lumber, organizing, and cutting a door into to the main shop through the common wall, what a project but hopefully when im done ill have some much needed space

Sounds like a good project Paul. I bet it will be great to add the space and then in a few days wish for some more.
