July 2, 201115 yr Good morning Friends,When planning a new project and having the cut list for the project that entails what you need to get the job done. Do you only buy that fixed amount or do you buy a little extra to avoid blemishes and knots?
July 2, 201115 yr  Good morning Ralph I always get a little extra just in case. I may not be able to work around knots or the ends may have splits etc.
July 2, 201115 yr I usually add about 10-15% more. Measure twice, cut once still doesn't always work for me.
July 2, 201115 yr I normally buy extra. You just never know what's going to happen. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
July 2, 201115 yr Knots are normally used by me in most projects. Checks and splits are a different story. It really depends on the type of wood being used, but I try for about 20-30 % extra. Can always be used in something else.
July 2, 201115 yr Really depends on two things. One is the Grade of lumber you buy, FAS versus Common and the wood species. I think 15% is a good number when buying the better grades. Black Walnut would be one where you might buy a little extra.Lare..
July 3, 201115 yr Author Good Morning Fellows,It is not unusual to buy even up to 30% more than what the plans call for because the amount in the project is showing only the finished clear parts however if a board has 83 2/3 % clear it is found to be classified as FAS (first and seconds). So with that in mind you will get the lumber most likely from the same tree if you are buying rough cut lumber.
