Good morning Friends,

When planning a new project and having the cut list for the project that entails what you need to get the job done. Do you only buy that fixed amount or do you buy a little extra to avoid blemishes and knots?

Good morning Ralph

I always get a little extra just in case. I may not be able to work around knots or the ends may have splits etc.

I usually add about 10-15% more. Measure twice, cut once still doesn't always work for me.

I normally buy extra. You just never know what's going to happen.

Knots are normally used by me in most projects. Checks and splits are a different story.

It really depends on the type of wood being used, but I try for about 20-30 % extra. Can always be used in something else.

Really depends on two things.

One is the Grade of lumber you buy, FAS versus Common and the wood species.  I think 15% is a good number when buying the better grades.  Black Walnut would be one where you might buy a little extra.

Good Morning Fellows,

It is not unusual to buy even up to 30% more than what the plans call for because the amount in the project is showing only the finished clear parts however if a board has 83 2/3 % clear it is found to be classified as FAS (first and seconds).

So with that in mind you will get the lumber most likely from the same tree if you are buying rough cut lumber.
