July 6, 201115 yr  Went to Omaha on a tool hunt this weekend and found things I didn't need or couldn't afford. Also found someone that wanted to charge 3.5 % if you used a debit card. Guess what 3.5% of nothing isn't much. On the way home we stopped at Walnut Iowa and I picked up a Stanley Bailey #5 and #6 along with a no name Compass saw with a nice handle and a E.C. Sterns folding Saw Vice. I got the #5 for $15 and the Compass saw for $4. The Vice was $6 and works good. The guy that had the #6 had to get it down from a shelf behind the counter. As he got it down he said it's made from two different planes and pointed at where it said Bailey and where it said Stanley. He then told me a guy explained it to him and he wanted me to know up front. I appreciated the honesty and decided he should know what he had (In my Opinion) then schooled him a little on what I know about Stanley and Lenard Baily and how it worked compared to another plane he had. I figured the price would be high after he learned it wasn't junk but he said how about $28. So I figured I'd save him the trouble of putting it back on the shelf. I clamped a saw in the vise to show how it works. Mark  Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
July 6, 201115 yr Great find Mark! I am laughing nicely at your lesson you gave the dealer. What is even cooler is the time you took to travel the dealer, and find these tools. That to me is a really fun day, it doesn't get much better! Thanks for sharing Mark. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
July 6, 201115 yr Thats awesome, Mark. I still buy used Stanley planes if I come across them and think I can fix them up. Sounds like you had a fun weekend. Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking

July 6, 201115 yr What are the small dovetailed pieces next to your braces? Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
July 6, 201115 yr Author  They are practice dovetails. I bought a 1 x 4 and cut it into 36" pieces and practiced cutting to a straight line and at angles. Then one a day dovetails for a couple weeks. Make a set cut them off do it again.  Good, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
July 7, 201115 yr AdamCongrats on the finds and purchases. Really enjoyed the part about giving the lesson to the dealer. It's nice to share knowledge and makes friends a long the way. As for you being an addict, it's a good addiction indeed.Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
July 7, 201115 yr Nice find Mark! I do have a question for Adam. Is there a 10 point plan for your addiction. Are you a member of TA....Tools Anonymous?Ron DudelstonAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
July 7, 201115 yr No sir. But I have a few 10ppi rip saws that I would have trouble parting with. A well sharpened saw is a joy to use. July 7, 201115 yr I have a Bailey #5 my wife picked up at a yard sale for $5.00. I cleaned it up, did some research to find the history, and discovered she made a pretty good buy.
July 7, 201115 yr Author  Sounds like you have a couple of keepers there Steve. My wife will point them out when she sees one but doesn’t want to take a chance on buying them yet. Which works out. She wouldn't want me buying fabric for her quilts either.  Nothing better than a spouse that is a woodworking enabler.MarkGood, Better, Best never let it restTill your Good is Better and your Better is Best.
