July 8, 201115 yr I have been plugging away on finishing up my new A&C inspired bathroom vanity for our downstairs half bath and am ready to do the final sand and stain this weekend and then put the finish on later in the week. The vanity is all red oak including the top with a copper vessel/bowl sink that sits on top of the vanity. I had just assumed that I would be using polyurathane, but wanted to see if there might be a better option as I have never used wood for a vanity top before where there will be water present.  Here is the vanity with the sink, faucet and backsplash with the tiles not glue in just sitting on there for reference.  Â
July 8, 201115 yr Very well done Allen. Make sure you do the same on the bottom of the vanity top as you do on the top. Endurovar by general finishes is a wonderful finish. Sprays wonderful, adds a hint of amber like solvent base finishes and is waterbase. Dries quick and easy, sands well. That would be my choice. bob Bob Kloeswww.bobkloes.com
July 8, 201115 yr I would agree with Bob....just because he's got the experience and knowledge. I've never used any General finish. However, an alternative, one I've used for wet applications, is McClosky's Man-O-War Marine Varnish. I pay $65.00/gal. I will give General a shot in the future.Â
July 9, 201115 yr Allen, selfishly I would like to see you take Bob up on his recommendation for the General Finish. I have not used it either. And I would love to actually have someone use it and report back. The fact that Bob has recommended it many times in the past tells that brand of finish is the cats meow. Otherwise Bob would not be backing it as he has. And I would like to see you use it, and report back as a first time user, as to the ease of use and appearance after it's all said and done.I have heard General Finishes thrown around here alot since some serious pros like my good friend Bob came aboard. I am going to have to purchase some myself and put it through it's paces, if I can use it successfully, then anyone can!John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
July 9, 201115 yr Oh, and by the way, your vanity is looking superb! Just perfect! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
July 9, 201115 yr I agree with Bob, Endurovar is a super finish, also I would suggest Arm R Seal,( also a GF product) its a urethane oil.. tough as nails as well, especially if you dont have spray capability,.,,
July 11, 201115 yr Just make sure, with any finish, keep those spills wiped up. The problem with counter tops and vanity tops, generally, someone always gets careless with a wet bar of soap or a wash cloth. Prolonged moisture, especially trapped moisture can cause the best finish to break down. As long as you wipe up your spills you should be ok. -Ace-
