July 14, 201115 yr I seem to have lumber everywhere but I try to keep it up on a rack I built in my shop. The rack is made of 2x4's and 2x6's and 3/4" plywood. I lag bolted the 2x4 uprights to the 2x4 studs in the wall and set the bolt head below the surface of the 2x4. I also drilled holes about every 10" or so through the side of the 2x4 so I could adjust the cantilever. Â The uprights are spaced out two feet apart. The bottom section will hold boards 14' long. I put 8' boards on the others. I have had no problems with anything warping on the rack. Â Here is a close up of the cantilever. It is a 2x6 with two pieces of 3/4" plywood glued and screwed to each side. The plywood goes back an extra 3 1/2" to allow it to slip over the upright and the 2x6 butts up against it. Â The bolt goes all the way through and has a nut on the other side. You can see the hole just below the cantilever so I can move them up or down. Â The cantilever is a 2x6 trimmed off and then rounded on the front. The plywood fits up tight against the wall. Â I have had quite a load of lumber on there at times and the wall has held it pretty good. Â So how do you store you lumber in the shop or do you keep it somewhere else? July 15, 201115 yr Because my wood is stored upstairs in a two story gambrel roofed barn I had to get creative and fit the rack to the angles roofline. The good part is that the wider lumber easily goes on the bottom. I'd give you a picture but I've overshot my rack limit and you can't see it for the wood stacked in from of it. July 15, 201115 yr I have a few buildings full. I have it stood on end in my main shop. On big pipe racks in another building. Wish I had more of those. In the other building it is dead stacked tight in piles around the building. I do have a wood rack I built in that building to lay boards on also. Its nice to sort through standing on end. Its nice piling on the pipe racks . bobBob Kloeswww.bobkloes.com

July 15, 201115 yr John, I don't keep a whole lot on hand, I have mostly scraps of all species, I buy what I need so I really don't have an inventory like I would like. Some day I want to build a shed for lumber at the side of my shop. I also want to mill my own lumber and have a solar kiln. Dreams! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker

July 19, 201114 yr Author Markk that sounds like a good option. Having a selection like that would make it an easy choice. Mark Lesch said: I keep mine in my shop. My real job I work in a grocery store so I have a lot of shelving from there it holds a ton it free and easy to change around.
July 19, 201114 yr I am pretty limited with storage space but since I got a new shed and moved all non-shop related items out of the garage, it does make my life easier. I have 3 storage areas in my garage. Â 1. Rolling Scrap Cart to keep smaller pieces in order and out of the way. Â Â 2. Overhead rack to keep larger pieces left over from other projects and stuff I just can't part with. (No, it is not bowed from the weight but it is due to lens perspective on wide angle) 3. Two shelves for storage of my children's rocking chair pieces (bottom shelf) and for my current projects (upper shelf) Â
