July 15, 201115 yr I received my new custom mallet from Dave Jeske at Blue Spruce Toolworks today and it is a gem. These pictures dont do it justice. When the light reflects off the head, the curly maple grain shimmers like no finish I have seen. Â Adam WelkerRed Car Construction and Fine Woodworking
July 15, 201115 yr Real nice Adam. What makes it custom? Is it made to fit your hand? Just asking. bob Bob Kloeswww.bobkloes.com
July 15, 201115 yr Author The regular mallets do not have dyed heads. I read an article on-line that Blue Spruce had made a couple of special mallets for Glen Huey of Fine Woodworking that had the heads dyed red. When I saw a picture of them, I was impressed and decided to see if one could be made for me dyed blue. The head is curly maple that is infused with acriylic. This process makes it extremely hard and almost dent proof. This is done to all of Blue Spruces mallets.Bob Kloes said: Real nice Adam. What makes it custom? Is it made to fit your hand? July 16, 201115 yr Author Absolutely. I will use it to knock some chisels when I pare the through dovetails on the legs, to undercut the shoulders on the tenons, to square up the mortises on the top and strechers, and probably a few other things as well. I have a mallet that I have used for years but it is beat up. I will try to reserve it for fine joinery in the future, but the bench is the perfect way to break it in.Bob Kloes said: Thanks Adam. July 16, 201115 yr Author Man, it feels great. Like it was made for my hand. The fit and finish are perfect in every way. It is worth every penny. I plan on purchasing a lighter one in the future as I am learning how to do relief carving and would like a smaller mallet.Wayne Mahler said: Wow very impressive indeed. I just the look of it.
