July 16, 201115 yr Good Morning Friends,While at the fair yesterday a fellow asked me how I could tell by looking at then end of a board and the pattern of the annual rings, which would tell me if the cut was quarter sawn or rift sawn. How would you tell what he was asking?
July 16, 201114 yr Flat sawn the annual rings are arched the width of the board. Quarter Sawn the rings are up and down on the end grain. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
July 17, 201114 yr And rift cut means that the rings are approximately 45 degrees from vertical. Lare..
July 17, 201114 yr Author Good Morning Fellows,Very good answers and correct according to the woodworkers guide in my collection of wood books. The book I have states that Quarter sawn wood will have annual rings that run from 75º to 90º while the rift sawn will have the annual rings from 45º to 74º and in flat sawn cuts the annual rings will curve from one side of the board to the other depending on the width of the board.
July 17, 201114 yr Ok, so which of these would be more stable for warping, twisting etc. HARRYBULLDOG WOODWORKING.MONTANA
