July 19, 201114 yr  My wife wanted a "darn ball" ( No, I didn't know what one was either.) It is a way to darn socks and other things by stretching them across the ball and stitching them. That way there is no knot and it is the proper size for the opening.  Anyway, I never make any thing simple and glued up some scrap pieces of Leopard wood, Yellow Hart, Cherry and Purple Hart to make a distinctive one.  She loves it.

July 23, 201114 yr Hello Ron,I remember that my mother had one made out of a billiard ball however it didn't have a handle on it but she would repair a sock in a very short time because when ever a hole was started in the heel of a sock it would be taken care of before it got too big. You may know the old proverb "a stitch in time makes everything fine."
July 23, 201114 yr Author Ralph, I think my mother may have had one too. I decided to put the handle on it as an after thought. My wife has small hands and having a handle gives her much better control, she like it much better than just the ball alone.
July 23, 201114 yr Nice Job!We would need two of these here, the way Quigley seems to find every pair we have and he chews holes in them!
July 29, 201114 yr I love it too Ron, great job man. The simplest items in woodworking can have the most character! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
