July 23, 201114 yr Good Morning Friends,There was no quiz yesterday because I had to have a test done at the hospital and everything worked out in the end. Grin. Now for today's quiz; What is the origin of "penny," the word used to define nail sizes?
July 23, 201114 yr If memory serves me correctly it was the price paid for the nails per 100. So a 5 penny nail would be 5 cents for 100 nails. Glad to hear your test went well and all worked out in the end. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
July 23, 201114 yr Had to look this one up and found several conflicting answers. This one seems to be the most plausible-http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-six2.htm It expands on what Wayne said except the "penny" is replaced with "pence" as in- 6 pence- a British monetary value. The symbol for the penny was "d.", from the French denier, from the Latin denarius (the solidus and denarius were Roman coins). BTW, glad your test were OK.
July 24, 201114 yr Author Good Morning Wayne and Lewis,You both are correct for that was the beginning of the system however today it is a long way from the beginning in price. Thanks for your support.
