WOODWORKING QUIZ for 25 JULY 11 "a learning tool"

Good Morning Friends,

When setting a pre-hung door do you mount the hinge side first or the latch side?

Hinge side first.   At least that is the way  I've done them.

My Dad was a "door hanger" back in the 50"s before pre-hung doors were around on tract jobs. He always did the hinge side first.

Good Morning Fellows,

You all are correct as this has been the method for many a year and it then could be shimmed out as needed till the door was plumb and then you would adjust the latch side up or down as needed and secure it with shims and nails to leave an even margin all around the door.

Thanks for your support.

hinge side first , never would consider doing the other side first

Depending where you are hanging the prehung door, occasionally the floor where the door may swing is higher in elevation than the hinge side jam area.  In this case it is always good to throw a level on the floor to check.  You may have to shim up the hinge side of the jamb to compensate.
