July 26, 201114 yr Well I got around to turning a couple of pens the other day. Â This one is from a piece of Cherry John Morris sent me some time back. This one is Ebony And this one is a Bubinga Slimline Pen. Â Â Just been a little while since I turned any pens, so I needed to put some back into my inventory. July 26, 201114 yr John...you have been a busy bee of late! Pens look great. What finish did you put on them? Â -Ace-
July 26, 201114 yr Nice job John. Pens look great. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
July 26, 201114 yr Author Ace, I used the BLO/CA finish. I put six coats on and then buffed them on the Beal system on my lathe. Â Thanks so much, it has been a bit busy, but I love to stay busy. I turned a deer call and sold it before I got to take a picture. Â Thanks, Wayne, the pens turned out pretty good, the pictures are a little dark and it was the camera. I had them in my photo booth with the halogen lights so I know there was enough light. Camera is getting a bit old so I guess I will be looking to update. August 1, 201114 yr They don't look as glossy as most CA finishes I've seen.  What do you use to keep the glare down? Also I like the three rings. Do you use a skew for that or a really thin parting tool?
August 1, 201114 yr Justin,I use guitar string to burn any rings that I do. If you don't burn it a bit, it does not show up as well. I sometimes use a skew tip to indent then burn with the string and sometimes I just burn with the string. Cut the string short enough then add wood balls as handles to the string. Gently apply pressure and smoke it a bit.
August 1, 201114 yr Author Hey Justin, I use a skew to cut the grooves and then I purchased a set of wires with the wooden balls on the ends to burn them with. I guess you could make them like Leo says, but I was at the store one day and just picked up a pack. They weren't that expensive and ready to use. They are shinner than the phots shows. Maybe the lights I use when I take the pictures and the angle I get. I try to keep the glare off so you can see the grain. Justin Hughes said:They don't look as glossy as most CA finishes I've seen.  What do you use to keep the glare down? Also I like the three rings. August 2, 201114 yr If you get a guitar string, then you can make a few with different lengths. I don't like them longer than I feel safe for each different diameter of projects. String is cheap at a music store and you might ask if they have second hand. I like them ribbed, they burn better. lol As mentioned, you can buy them already made up also. Â
August 2, 201114 yr well since all I have are bass strings, that would make some wide grooves. <grin>
