Featured Replies

Well I got around to turning a couple of pens the other day.

This one is from a piece of Cherry John Morris sent me some time back.

Just been a little while since I turned any pens, so I needed to put some back into my inventory.

John...you have been a busy bee of late! Pens look great. 111.gif What finish did you put on them?

Ace, I used the BLO/CA finish. I put six coats on and then buffed them on the Beal system on my lathe.

Thanks so much, it has been a bit busy, but I love to stay busy. I turned a deer call and sold it before I got to take a picture.

Thanks, Wayne, the pens turned out pretty good, the pictures are a little dark and it was the camera. I had them in my photo booth with the halogen lights so I know there was enough light. Camera is getting a bit old so I guess I will be looking to update.

They don't look as glossy as most CA finishes I've seen.  What do you use to keep the glare down?

Also I like the three rings. Do you use a skew for that or a really thin parting tool?

Justin,

I use guitar string to burn any rings that I do. If you don't burn it a bit, it does not show up as well. I sometimes use a skew tip to indent then burn with the string and sometimes I just burn with the string.  Cut the string short enough then add wood balls as handles to the string.  Gently apply pressure and smoke it a bit.

Good idea, thanks

Hey Justin, I use a skew to cut the grooves and then I purchased a set of wires with the wooden balls on the ends to burn them with. I guess you could make them like Leo says, but I was at the store one day and just picked up a pack. They weren't that expensive and ready to use.

They are shinner than the phots shows. Maybe the lights I use when I take the pictures and the angle I get. I try to keep the glare off so you can see the grain.

Good photography then. It's hard to get good pictures of a glossy finish.

If you get a guitar string, then you can make a few with different lengths. I don't like them longer than I feel safe for each different diameter of projects. String is cheap at a music store and you might ask if they have second hand. I like them ribbed, they burn better. lol  As mentioned, you can buy them already made up also. Grin.gif

well since all I have are bass strings, that would make some wide grooves. <grin>
