Greene & Greene, Frank Lloyd Wright and Sam Maloof furniture (lots of pics)

Featured Replies

My wife Tami and I spent the day on Monday at the "Huntington Library" which is located in San Marino, CA which is just east of Los Angeles and about an hour from our home. It is 207 acres with 120 of those acres devoted to botanical gardens and landscapes as well as one of the nation's top research libraries and world class art exhibits. This area of San Marino and Pasadena were major areas of Arts & Crafts design and construction by the Greene brothers and Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1900's. The Huntington Library has a permanent exhibit of furniture of Greene & Greene as part of thier connection with the "Gamble House"  which was designed and built by the Greene brothers in 1908 and was donated to the USC School of Architecture. Along with these craftsmen's work they also have some pieces of Sam Maloof and they will be having a specific exhibition of Sam Maloof's work from September 24th 2011 thru January 30th 2012 which will include not only Maloof's work but also the work of a number of the top artists and craftsmen in the So. California area that Maloof worked with over the years.

So if you happen to find yourself here in So. California, plan on spending a day at the Huntington Library and bring your camera as the grounds are beautiful.

The photos taken inside the galleries were all done with no flash as it was not allowed.

Sam Maloof:

These 2 pieces were made for the Primary Violinist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra in 1972. The chair was specifically made to fit his body to provide back support while allowing arm movement. They are made entirely from Brazillian Rosewood. After the violinist's death, his wife returned the pieces to Maloof.

God bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

Allen that looks like a great adventure. I'll have to add that to my bucket list. One of these days I am going to get a trip back to the West Coast and I will try to look these spots up.

We have a Frank Lloyd Wright home here in Florence, AL.   http://www.wrightinalabama.com/

The family it was designed for gave it to the city for a museum. It is about 5 blocks from my workplace. Very interesting designs and furniture.
