August 6, 201114 yr Greetings All As you know I have been turning as weekend turner just over a year now. Next "toy" to shed would be power carving tool but what kind, what brand etc..Any ideas? What units do you use, good points, bad points. I would be using mine when piece is finished, to do extra carving on top of the bowl or hollowing side walls where cantle light would shine out etc. Thank you Jari
August 9, 201114 yr I did a little carving with a dremel tool and recently took a class in hand carving with gouges. I think the dremel is going to be easier on the bowls. I may look into a Fordom or whatever the name is as an upgrade to the dremel if it works out and I stay with it.
August 9, 201114 yr Jari, I was at a Woodturning Symposium earlier this year and the session I was in dealing with carving they were using the dremel tool. I was also in a Trent Bosch session once and he was using a dremel to do caring to bowl edges. I guess there are some other tools out there, but that is what I have seen in use. Trent Bosch also makes and sells a carving stand that mounts on the lathe.http://www.trentbosch.com/  John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 12, 201114 yr Jari, the little power carving I have done, for dishing out seats on the rockers I am working on, was with a right angle grinder and a Kutzall wheel, they come in various grits and shapes. Just another option. John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker
