There is nothing worse than squeaking stairs in the middle of the night except a door where the hinges squeak when you open it.

How can you remedy this from happening?

The only stairs I have are the three sets of 4 treads ea. on our deck. If they squeak, I don't (care to) notice.  So, I can only guess that squeaking stairs could be remedied by shoring  up the stringers and tightening the fastenings that hold the treads. For squeaking door hinges, I use graphite on the pins.

Construction adhesive has it's purpose.

+1 for what Gene said. I do, however, like John's idea for the hinges!

wedges under the treads or risers,  use some talc powder..

Sounds like you all have had a problem or two and for the squeaking doors I first use petroleum Jelly in the pins and it usually takes care of the situation.
