Hello from Oregon

Featured Replies

Compared to this artistic group - I just dabble in woodworking.  Equipment of choice thus far is the scroll saw.

Would like to try my hand at the lathe.  Any simple projects any of you might suggest? I have a

12" x 36"  lathe, turning tools, and safety equipment.  Determined to make the time.  Very interested in making plates and bowls.

I'm not completely new to turning.  Have made pens on our mini lathe.

It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

Plates are fun and very quick so I'd try that first.

I appreciate your response.  There is nothing prettier than a wooden plate.  Glad to hear they are fun and easy.   Sounds like just what I am looking for.

keep us posted on your progress. There a lot of great turners here to help you along in your journey as you may already know.  As for your comment about your work, you do very good, nothing to hanging your head down over. The project you did with the bee's from Sheila was great as well as others. Being humble is a great quality as we walk with the grace's of our Lord and Savior. Just don't sell yourself short, you do great work.

Thanks  for the wonderful welcome!  I am so excited about doing some turning, it's ridiculous.  I am keeping a close eye on craig's list for a better and bigger lathe, but in the mean time hoping to figure out the basics on 10" and 11" bowls on our cheap HF 12" x 36" lathe. Really need to glue up a bowl design tonight, cut it out tomorrow and glue all the rings & bottom, so it will be ready to turn Saturday morning.  My poor hubby.  The lathe is the only tool in the shop he can call his own, and now I'm planning on  taking that over, too.  :)

Oregon is a beautiful state.  We have everything here - the beach, the mountains, and desert.  Will this be your first visit to Oregon?  I'm not sure where you are going in Oregon, but one beautiful place is Silver Falls.  This park has 7 or 8 water falls, which you can hike to on mostly paved trails.  It's on Hwy 214, 26 miles east of Salem.  I've attached a picture of one of the falls which I recently took at Silver Falls.  ning-silverfalls500-41832-41.jpg close you will see someone walking to the right on the falls.  It's a path that takes you under and around the falls.
