August 17, 201114 yr worked tonight on a prototype of a new handle for my "toothpick maker". piece of wood i used was a chunk of western red cedar. the eye of the axe is totally different than anything i can find locally, also the butt of the handle is more comfortable to grip on the original handle than on mass produced handles. note the template of the eye on the head of the axe.    the top piece is the original handle, middle is the template i made of the original, broadaxe, eye template on the head of the axe.  PS i need to build a shaving horse.
August 18, 201114 yr Nice job on the fitting. Cedar can be a little soft so Ash or Hickory would be better choice if you find the need to rebuild it again.
August 19, 201114 yr Author the cedar was only a trial piece, working on the actual handle out of white ash, thanks about the fitting part
