August 19, 201114 yr Well I have been in the middle of a run of Cutting Boards getting ready for a couple of upcoming shows. I am hoping to get some time this weekend on the lathe. Got a few items that I just really need to get turned. Took nine walnut logs to the saw mill on Thursday and should be picking it up first part of next week. They got started cutting some of it while I was still there and it had some really nice grain. Of course they also hit a nail in the first log so that cost me a little extra. Hoping to work on getting some of the Coin holders finished for the WWP challenge. So what about you, what are you working on this weekend? It should be a good time to be in the shop. Share with us what you are making. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 19, 201114 yr Since I wrapped up my Arts & Crafts Vanity and got it out of the garage, I have a bit of clean up and re-organizing to do before moving forward. I got a call from a guy who wants one of my 3D cutting boards out of maple, walnut, cherry and padauk so I checked the wood pile and I had everything except for the padauk so I picked up a piece and now I am good to go and should get everything cut up and the first glue-up done this weekend. Next week I want to get going on the rest of the bathroom renovation as I have to grout the new tile and then do the patch, texture and paint before I can install the vanity. Saturday we have a BBQ to go to from church and Saturday night to the Angels baseball game with friends and they have a concert afterwards by the Christian band "Mercy Me" which is one of our favorites. So we have a busy weekend.
August 19, 201114 yr Still working on getting a solid maple workbench built. I have the end trestle assemblies dry fitted and am working on the stretchers that will connect the ends together. After paring the tenons down to fit the mortises it will be another dry fit, locate and drill holes for pins and drawbore the joints together.I am back to work tomorrow so I will not be able to work on anything over the weekend. I also need to uncover an old Walker Turner 10" table saw that I have sold and get it ready for a journey east on Tuesday.I will start ripping a few pieces of 8/4 maple and walnut for a few coin holders when I get home on monday. My job is to give my kids things to discuss with their therapist
August 19, 201114 yr I'm stil sitting at the campground this weekend. On the horizon though is some storage shelving for holding paper records.
August 19, 201114 yr Getting into the mass production mode for doing 40 of the custom knife blocks. Picked up 30 bf of 6/4 cherry last weekend and began re-sawing the 15" x1/2 " wedges needed. Will pick up the 75bf of maple this weekend and on the 29th will make the trip to NC to pick up 200bf of walnut. Clean up the shop to make room for all this lumber. Change blades on the jointer, planer and bandsaw. Having fun now!!! Mike'why but it if you can build it'www.midlothianwoodworks.com
August 19, 201114 yr Mike,While I know that this is a business for you, myself and others would love to see a tutorial for making knife blocks as they are great projects that make great gifts for Christmas. I have made about 4-5 knife blocks for family and friends and I could not find much of aything online so I had to wing it.Mike Mathieu said:Getting into the mass production mode for doing 40 of the custom knife blocks. August 19, 201114 yr Hoping top get the final coats on the Challenge coin displays, finish up the Last Supper Cross, Get started on the next one in the series. Had a meeting today with the guy for the trophies, he's talking 23 by the in of September now. Guess I better stock up on red oak and get ready for a run on them. Mamma wants me to get started on her Kitchen Island but don't see that in the near future and finish her Queen Anne Style Table. Hopefully I'll get time tomorrow to get to it for a while.  Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
August 20, 201114 yr I'll be at a friends cabin up in the mountains today, she has a punch list of items she would like done, and some advice for other things. One of the things I will be doing is removing some 60 year old T&G cedar interior paneling, very diligently I might add. There is a small section of wall that needs insulation and in order for me to insulate it, I need to get the paneling off. It is nerve racking, this stuff is brittle, and irreplaceable. A few years back I built a cherry built in book case for her home, and I had to remove some of the paneling around the new opening, as I got my bars and slim jims behind the paneling, you could just hear the stuff creak and crack. It's a game of pry a little here, a little there, get a sawzall blade behind it, cut some nails etc. While I am up there, I will be enjoying the much cooler temps than we have here in our valley! August 20, 201114 yr At 8:00am this morning we have an appointment to see a Grizzly lathe G1495 for $500.00.  (He's even throwing in his turning tools.)  By using the outboard, this should handle the size bowls I plan to turn. Hope to turn a bowl or two today.  S  It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
August 20, 201114 yr Author Best of luck. Hope it turns out to be a great lathe. We will be watching to see this first bowl.SQ said: At 8:00am this morning we have an appointment to see a Grizzly lathe G1495 for $500.00.  (He's even throwing in his turning tools.)  By using the outboard, this should handle the size bowls I plan to turn. Hope to turn a bowl or two today.  S  It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

August 21, 201114 yr Purchased the Grizzly G1495 and couldn't be happier. I love it!  I have been missing the boat by trying to finish these bowls on a tilting spindle sander.  With my very limited experience at turning, I can already see it's going to be easier, quicker, and more accurtate than the technique I have been using!  Posted pictures of machine with some attachments removed and a pic of a reject bowl I was practicing on at "Is this a CRAZY notion.   I just love my new baby! SQ     It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
August 22, 201114 yr Author So how about some updates, how did you fair on your agenda this weekend. Me, well I got five 4" hand mirrors turned. Waiting on the finish to dry and will get some pictures posted. Sanded on a few cutting boards but that seems like an every time I am in the shop thing to do. I also met with a gentleman about building some porch swings. He has one his father build and his son is wanting one for each of the kids built from a pattern of this one. They are suppose to bring it to me this week. It was hanging in the barn and was broken on one side. I should be able to get the patterns cut out and go from there. Should be a fun project. I didn't get to start my WWP coin holders. Had everything laid out but had too many disruptions. Maybe this week I can finish those off. So how about the rest of you, how did you fair on your projects? John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

Here is the Last Supper Cross ready for finish.  Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
