August 22, 201114 yr Good Morning Friends,When using a tripod level you first must get an elevation grade from a known bench mark and you may want to set a grade on a stake closer to the work area. Can you be assured that the transferred grade will always be accurate?
August 22, 201114 yr Double check the transfer. Make absolutely certain the grading rod (or rule) is vertical (plumb) at both locations.
August 22, 201114 yr  We would set up a batter board near the area (  painted bright orange) but the grade was set using a nail in the batter board's  "arms".   That way, we could set all the different grades we needed.   Use the same transit/level,  use the same grade stick , and the same level (48" kind, laid along the edge of the stick) to keep the stick plumb.     The transfer can be done.   Just double check each location.  Once you've transfered the grade to the batter board, NOBODY is allowed to even breathe on it.   Place it so it is out of the way from anyone working in the area.   Watch out for operators and their equipment moving in the area.    'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
August 23, 201114 yr Author Good morning Lewis and Steve,You are correct Steve for that has been used many times before but, how do you know for sure that the batter board didn't accidentally get bumped or moved in one way or another? Lewis is correct never take a chance that it is still correct but first check the known bench mark to assure it is correct.
