August 24, 201114 yr  I followed suggestions on how to finish my Cherry grandfather clock. I bought the special water based sealer and a water based cherry dye. All went very well and I was proud of the way it looked.  I sprayed poly on the hood and it came out a very nice deep finish. I ran out of the poly and in a couple of days I went to big box and bought some Rustoleum clear poly to finish the job. I sprayed the large base and left it overnight. WHAT A  MESS!!  The new poly changed all the dark areas to a near black and the whole base was one hockey sticks of a mess. It looked like there was fuzz on most places too. I later sprayed a piece of scrap and discovered that the fuzz was coming from the spray can.  I have been sanding for the last 2 days and refinishing. This time I used an alcohol based sealer and the dye. I bought a poly that I know, that I have used many times before, and things came out really good.Lesson learned the hard way, stick with what you know works good. Of course doing a scrap piece first would have told me, but after the hood did so well, I naturally assumed the rest would go as well
August 24, 201114 yr RonWelcome to the club. I'm sure we have all been there and done that. Thanks for the needed reminder and lesson review. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
August 24, 201114 yr Hey Ron...just curious...was that the Varathane (spelling?) water-based in a spray can that cause you issues? -Ace-
August 24, 201114 yr Sorry for that problem Ron. I know I have been through a few finishing issues at time also. It sure isn't fun when you are that far along and have to go back to the sanding phase. The bad side of it is, sometimes you go back and they don't carry what you started with anymore. It is always good to check your supply ahead of time and see if it is still available or go ahead and purchase more before you get into the finishing. Hope the rest goes well, I know you have been working on it for some time. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

August 24, 201114 yr Author  I found out that our humidity yesterday was 9% and am wondering if that had some effect on the fuzz that appeared on the finish. When I wiped it with a towel, most came off. I wonder if some of the propellant and micro-spray particles solidified before or as it touched the surface.Â
August 24, 201114 yr 9% humidity? Wow the high for humidity today here is 82%. It is 54% right now. I wouldn't know how to act in with it that low. Ron Altier said: I found out that our humidity yesterday was 9% and am wondering if that had some effect on the fuzz that appeared on the finish. August 25, 201114 yr Author Great news for me!! Â After sanding and working for 3 days on the clock, I finally have the finish on and it looks great. I rubbed it down with Rottenstone and it looks sharp. I used antique cherry stain and it does look that way. Â I returned to Rockler today to get the Rottenstone and talked to the same guy who told me how and what to use with the water based wood dye. When I told him how it turned dark and black. Â He said "Yes that will happen some time with dye" I asked why he didn't mention that before, because it would have saved me one hockey sticks of a lot of work. He said that it don't happen often and he never gave it a thought. Anyway I'll post some pictures when I get the glass in the doors and can reassemble everything.
August 25, 201114 yr That's great new Ron. Isn't that the way it always is, they remember to tell you something when you tell them what happened to you. Would have been good information to have had up front. Oh well at least you are almost there now. Looking forward to the pictures.   John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 25, 201114 yr Ron, for future finishing, never mix solvent on top of waterbase. Sounds like you needed a sealer coat before the dye. Good lessons, but they are a bugger when you are working. Like you said, samples would have saved lots of issues. bob Bob Kloeswww.bobkloes.com
August 26, 201114 yr Glad you could fix the finish.  Looking forward to seeing it all put together. SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
August 26, 201114 yr Author  It has been one hockey sticks of a trip, but I am nearly there. I sure learned a lot about finishing. I have some other projects and honey do's now, so it may not be finished for another week or two.
