You know today was moving along very well in the shop. Since Friday I have been working on making some of my 3-D cutting boards as I had a guy email me wanting one as a wedding gift for his son and one for him and his wife. So I checked my lumber supply and I had the 1" thick maple, walnut and cherry in stock but had to get a small piece of paduak as I didn't have any in my scrap bin. So I cut up everything and did the first glue-up on Friday. In between other things since then I got the cutting boards all done and today I did my final sanding and was going to put on the little rubber feet and then put the mineral oil them. Everything was going just fine and dandy and then I did something stupid.

On my smaller cutting boards which are typically about 12"x8" and about 7/8" thick after final sanding, I use the 1/2" diameter peel and stick rubber feet as opposed to the larger 1" diameter screw on feet. I always add in a 3/4" pin to provide lateral support as the most common reason the feet come off is due to side force not the glue failing. This works great with no problems. Well, I grabbed the 1" pins as opposed to the 3/4" pins by mistake. So every one of the cutting boards I made (5 in total) has the tips of the pins poking through the surface. There is no way to remove the pins or to use a punch to push them down so the boards are all ruined. So now I have to go out and pick up more lumber and start from scratch. The ruined boards I trimmed up on the table saw making them more square-ish to retain the pattern and they will be added into my wife's "gift box" as they are still usable but not for my client.

Oh well, such is life. This is what the boards are supposed to look like when not messed up by me. They all are now about 1.25" shorter on the long sides

Wow, nice looking board. I have yet to make any of those. I did build the jig but that was as far as I got.

Sorry about the mistake. It happens to all of us at the worse possible moments. I have been going to make one more lite pass on a pen and blow out the side of a blank and have to start all over.

Well at least your wife will be happy and someone that gets one of those beautiful boards as a gift will be excited.

Sorry to hear about your screw up. But man those are great looking boards.

God bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.

Truly amazing!  Finished product is a little bit smaller than planned, but still truly amazing.  Fortunately we seem to learn more from our mistakes, then our successes. Bet that mistake will never happen again.  Those smaller boards for gifts could land you many more orders.  :)

It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

Allen,

I feel your pain.  I have done that more than I want to admit.

I posted a tip over at Wood on how I used magnetic strips on my brad nailer and pinner with the legnth of fastners loaded in the magazine.  I was poo-pooed by some saying "I never do that".  Well I do, and have saved myself a couple of times since I added them.

It happens to everyone.  Some are just not man/woman enough to admit it.

If you don't make mistakes, you're not learning. I have made so many over the years. Just happens. It shows you are a good craftsman by how you fix your mistakes.bob
