August 31, 201114 yr comment_41176  Tonight, on a woodworking show, I saw how a guy finished his jewelry box project. He used Poly semigloss spray and then he said he finished it by using a sponge brush. I don't know how that would work or what it would accomplish. They show him using the brush on the front of the box in a hurried fashion, maybe to give it texture. However, I think that would present more problems with sticking and uneven texture.    Can anyone tell me what I am missing or what can be accomplished using this method? Report
August 31, 201114 yr comment_41181 Aside from any special finishing technique. I would suspect the spray method was to get the poly to the wood, brush or spray, doesn't really matter. The brush was then used to level and even out the finish prior to it flowing out on it's own. Perhaps that explains the hurry method used. Now some finishes are formulated for spray only. However, let's think about this, if a brushing finish is loaded into a spray gun ( our case a spray can )and that finish is applied to the wood. You could certainly brush over it. The key would be spray heavy coats then brush it out. -Ace- Report

My personal preference is wipe on though., there are just certain things where spray is needed. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free. Report
