When prepping a basemant walls for either paneling or drywall finish, what are some of the things you should check on and do before applying the first sheet of either products?

Check for moisture issues and resolve them if possible.  Apply some type of vapor barrier.  If you're using furring strips to concrete or blocks, make sure your layout will work.

You are 100% correct for it would be a shame to do all of the work making a nice family room in the basement if you had water issues.
