Fat Leg Tables

Featured Replies

can anyone suggest a video to help learn to turn fat legs for tables. Thanks for the help.

Steve, can you elaborate a little more. I guess I am having a mental block on what you are looking for. Are you talking about a hollow fat leg to run cables in or are you referring to log type legs?

Sorry,

John,

these would be solid table legs. I have the worst time using a thin gouge in making the ringlets. it always wants to bite into the wood making the dreaded spiral blemish. I know it's me, but always helps to watch others and learn their technique.

okay I wasn't sure if that is where you were going it this or not.

Making the beads can be a bit tricky and takes a bit of practice. I turn mine with a parting tool and use the tip of the front edge and roll the tool. So I start in the middle of the bead and if I am turning the right side, I use the tip of the right side of the parting tool and with the tool straight up, I roll the tool to the right. I only take of small bites at a time till I get the shape I want. Then you do the same thing on the other side of the bead. Tool in the middle, left edge and roll the tool to the left. Takes a little bit of practice.

ning-100-3968-41167-17.jpg?width=721it really isn't the best demonstration, but here is a mirror handle I turned last week and put the beads  and coves on. Some practice on a small spindle will help you get the feel. Very light touch and a good sharp tool.

The bead and ball on the end of this handle is using the same technique.

I didn't really put a bead on this table leg, but the cut starting the cove in the middle is similar,
