Looking for Individuals to tudor me in woodworking and finishing

Featured Replies

Greetings

Since I am really new to wood working I would like to have several tudors in helping me make wood projects.  The areas I am looking for are;

Planning, Cut Lists, Cutting, Assembling, Glueing, Clamping, and Finishing

1.  Boxes and Small Projects.

2.  Making a Headboard for a future bed.

3.  Making a Rocking Chair.

4.  Making 2 Blanket Chests for Daughters

If anyone is interested on getting emails or PM's on how tools work and questions on projects.  Please let me know.

Arlin what type of joinery are you planning on using for these boxes? Box joints, dove tails ? Hand Cut ? Memory boxes are a treasured item. I have made a few for folks and they have become as important as the person they were dedicated to.

Hello Arlin,

I also would be very happy to help you learn about woodworking and I even wish you could come to my shop for I have trained well over 120 individuals and if it will help you here is my tutorial Vocational Carpentry Program.

www.ralphjoneswoodworking.com also you may email me with any questions and tricks of the trade that you won't find in any book.

I am going to insert a pattern for you to cut your teeth on so here we go my friend;

ning-tacktrunkdrawings-40817-63.jpg?widtThis is a basic size toy chest, blanket chest or a hope chest. This is really a simple box to make. You can make a half tray for the runners inside of the trunk so one would not have to take it out completely to get to something in the bottom.

Good Luck my friend.

I'll offer some design help if you need it.

I would start with the easier items first to get the experience and confidence needed to build the more complex stuff like the rocking chair.

I can also share some finishing ideas too..  Read some of my blogs.

Lare..

I have made a few blanket chests in the past.  As for a vid, one could go to Norm's website ( newyankee.com) and watch a few of his shows from the old New yankee Workshop.    Each week, there is a "new" program.

I do have a set of Bunk Beds coming up, when they send my some start-up cash,  and maybe I'll do another Blanket chest.   As for a Rocking Chair, well, that's Mr. Morris' venu.

Maybe, IF you have a bandsaw or a scroll saw,  you could make some of my little reindeers.   I think there is a picture or two of them on here somewhere.   I have been doing this hobby since high school ( about 1968)  and I'm still learning things.Grin.gif

I would be happy to help however I can. I would suggest simple projects at first. Boxes are a great foundation for learning traditional joinery. I have a couple books that might help you along. They certainly helped me. One is "Box by Box" and has 14 or 15 boxes and instructions with color photos and clear explainations. The other is an older guide to woodworking and covers just about everything from machines to hand tools. If you are interested, send me your address and I will mail them to you.

Many of us here started our woodworking endeavors under the guidance of a father, grandfather or relative but for those new to the field there are many like your self that may not get that opportunity and that's one reason for this web site and those of us who wish to see the many newcomers continue our craft. I myself have been in the field for over 45 years and am always glad to help and inform.

If you haven't started your woodworking library yet I would suggest one of my favorite books by Nick Engler-

http://www.amazon.com/Nick-englers-woodworking-wisdom-Engler/dp/0762101792

The is a great manual for all woodworkers especially newcomers in that it is written with the intent of instruction from tree to final product, Very detailed in explaining the various procedures and plenty of illustrations.

You might check your local book store (B.A.M.) for a copy or place your order through Amazon. It is an out of print book but if you do find one you'll be amazed with it's contents.

As for your basic or first woodworking project , boxes are always a fun project and many combinations of joints and embellishment can be used to further your skills to other projects.

If you need further advice feel free to ask away as I along with the forum members are more than glad to help!!

While you are looking for books, check out the four books by Roy Underhill.   They deal with HAND TOOLS, and are about something called the Woodwright's shop.  Roy also has a weekly show on PBS.  You can even go to pbs.org,  and look up The Woodwright's Shop.   There will be about three seasons worth of 30 minute shows.

Arlin, you have come to the right place for help.  There are many people here with years of experience willing to help.

There are many software programs - some free that could make designing your own box patterns possible.  There are also many free woodworking plans online.  I use some very inexpensive software to design all my personalized boxes, bowl patterns, word art, signs, etc.

I see from your post you have a lathe.  Your gouge handles look fantastic!  What other tools do you have?

I have some experience at designing patterns for boxes, word art, etc which I cut on a scroll saw.  If I can be of any assistance, just ask.  :)

It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought the book from Amazon. Book was $.52 and shipping was about $4.00 .

"lightly used" I couldn't find a mark on it. Looked like it came off the "new" shelf.

I like to read and looks like a lot of good info in it.

For under $5.00 you couldn't go wrong.Smile.gif
