A friends grandfather passed away and they were cleaning out his small woodshop. They saved me these "wood clamps"  When I picked them up, I have never seen any like them. Can anyone till me what and how?

There are 10  2X2s with the black plastic half rounds in them.

There are 4 scissor clamps with screw and handle

There are 4 scissor clamps without screw and handle.

I have NO idea. I place one clamp where it looks like it may go.

Double bar clamps for edge gluing panels. One 2X on top and one on the bottom. The metal thingie fits over both at each end and hooks into the plastic notches. Tightening the screws clamps the edges together and clamps the boards on the top and bottom to aid in alignment....less planing and sanding.

Here's a site that may explain it better. Double Bar Clamps

Thanks Gene, I wish I had them last week! I glued up 3 panels and rigged up my own clamps using boards and Irwin clamps.

I'll have to give them a try and see how they work. I also have another jig that was a puzzle, but I found the instructions for it. It is a precision edge dowel jig that uses scissor action to hold boards together. I am sure this is another oldie, no biscuits back then.

Gene, I found a video on the Shop Smith site and it fully demonstrates how everything works.

Thanks again

If you don't want those clamps I'll take them off your hands.  I really like mine.  They are a little clumsey to use, but what they do makes up for it.  I've only got one set of them and when Woodcraft had them on sale a couple months ago I planned on getting another set but I never made it to Grand Rapids to get them.

Roy, we may be able to work something out.

I use these type of clamps all the time for cutting board and panel glue ups. They are also called "4-way Clamps" as they clamp with pressure on all 4 sides. One key to make sure that the glue won't stick to the 2x4 basses is to use clear packing tape to wrap the face and sides of the 2x4's as the glue won't stick to the tape. I keep wanting to pick up a few more of these clamps as they work great. Yes, they are a bit awkward to use at first, but once you get the swing of it they are easy to use and you will wonder how you lived without them.

You can also find them "HERE" at Woodcraft.
