September 11, 201114 yr Good Morning Friends,In the field of wood working there are many terms that explain what a certain part of the framing of a building but when stated most folks know what it is and where it goes. What is the term of a part of framing that goes by the name of a cripple stud?
September 11, 201114 yr Short studs that fill in the space under/over an opening- framing in a window.
September 11, 201114 yr Anytime one cuts a stud, they "cripple" it.   It applies to any stud that isn't "full length".  Another reason to save your off-cuts. 'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
September 12, 201114 yr Correct. Roy. The short one attached to the King stud and does indeed support the header.. But it's not called a "cripple," Lare..
September 12, 201114 yr  I think that the particular name one uses largely depends on what part of the country they are in, different areas have different terms that they use that someplace else in the country may not use. I know in my present teaching job I'm finding terms in the book that are different than what I'm used to. You just need to get the concept down and then be a little flexible in what others are calling it.Â
September 14, 201114 yr Author Good Morning Fellows,This was a good topic and Larry is correct the the Jack studs are only for holding the headers. While cripple studs are in deed for placing under window openings.
