September 12, 201114 yr Good Morning Friends,I could have sworn I posted a quiz yesterday but evidently I didn't how ever here is one for today.I have heard a lot about heat pumps over the years but, never saw the need to add one to my heating system because I heard that after the temperature gets low enough they quit working. Can someone explain their function?
September 12, 201114 yr You are right, Ralph. Below a certain temperature, they cannot produce heat efficiently. It is my understanding that they can extract heat using the same principle as an air conditioner but then they can also reverse the process and apply the extracted heat to a living space when it is cold outside. Summer- move heat from inside to outside. "Winter"- move heat from outside to inside. I have been told that the new heat pumps are much more efficient and use less electricity that older models. In fact, most people in this area (south central PA) put in a heat pump when replacing their central air units.
September 12, 201114 yr RalphYou did post a quiz yesterday. It is located here. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free.
September 12, 201114 yr Lew is correct in how they work. Here I Alabama they work prett well however for those times it gets below the temperature for it to work we have a backup gas system that kicks in. It is part of the same unit, just uses the gas when the heat pump can't efficiently produce heat.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
September 14, 201114 yr Author Good Morning Fellows,I can't see the need of the expense for an item that will only work during a set temperature setting so I just let the furnace do the job of heating or cooling as needed.
