September 15, 201114 yr comment_40638 Here is a little scrolled  box 6 3/4 inches x 8 1/2 inches I designed and finished last weekend - made from ash.  No finish on this as the gal that ordered the box wanted to add her own wood stain. Thinking about making some round boxes that I can turn on the lathe.  lol   SQ     It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing. Report

September 15, 201114 yr comment_40647 Very nice work SQ. I think they will be happy with that. Love the grain on the side of the box and the way it is flowing on the top. Hope they use something that will accent that. Some turned boxes with a little scroll work on top would be really nice. Go for it. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com Report
September 15, 201114 yr Author comment_40646 Thank so much.  This is the fifth personalized box this gal has ordered from me.  She has also placed an order for a sixth personalized box which will be 7" x 7" x 16 inches - large enough to hold a bottle of wine. The lid will have grape leaves and grapes, the couples names and date of their marriage.  I have figured out how to scroll this entire box and will be working on the design soon.  I always grumble about these personalized boxes which take me away from making bowls.  lol  But in the end, they are always a great learning experience.   SQ John Moody said:Very nice work SQ. September 16, 201114 yr Author comment_40645 John, thanks for the kind words.  Some people think ash is kind of a boring wood, but I have always liked the grain.   SQ John Morris said:Yes indeedy! Nice grain pattern and excellent scrolling SQ. Very nice! John MorrisThe Patriot Woodworker Report
September 16, 201114 yr Author comment_40644 Wayne, thanks!  Appreciate you taking a look.  Ash is so hard when I'm cutting the body of the box, I break out my # 11 blades. SQ Wayne Mahler said:Great job Susie.Love the way it came out and everything goes together. Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free. September 16, 201114 yr comment_40642 Wow Susie, #11 blades. I though they were for jigsaws . Ash is indeed hard. But I love working with it. I have 2 pieces here that are heart and sap wood just begging for that special project.  Wayne MahlerGod bless and protect our troops that serve so we can be free. Report

September 17, 201114 yr Author comment_40640 Arlin, thank you.  That's a good idea about mixing other woods with the ash, especially for turning.  I will  have to do some experimenting.  I love combining walnut, cherry, and maple in different projects.   I have to admit I'm really stingy with the walnut since it's so expensive.  I don't have a warehouse full of it, like some people I know.   SQ Arlin Eastman said: SQ That is just wonderful scroll work and fine workmanship. I really like ash also, I like boxes make from them and using it mixed with other woods for turning. September 17, 201114 yr Author comment_40639 I bet you could easily make that box on that Delta 700 scroll saw. Â That Delta 700 would look mighty nice in my shop.
