It's Friday again, What is on Your Woodworking Agenda?

Featured Replies

Yep, here we are another Friday.

Cooler weather is moving in and it is a great time to be in the shop. Time to get started on all of those fall projects and even those for Christmas. That's right, Christmas is just around the corner.

I am starting a week of home improvement projects. Very ambitious in that I think we have about several weeks of items on the list and a week to accomplish it all. We will start tonight with clearing out the living/den in the house of furniture so we can take up the old carpet. Purchased Brazilian Koa wood floor to put down. We got the engineered floating floor and I hope we can get it down tomorrow. I have never seen under the carpet in this house so I may have other repairs to make once the carpet is out of the way. I have a stair rail that will have to have some engineering on it and I posted a question over in the Home Improvement section. Hope I get some good suggestions there.

Once the floor is down, I have 11 small windows to replace with double pain windows. I have five other windows in the house, but had to special order the windows for those. Couple of weeks before they come in.

I also have two craft shows coming up in a couple of weeks, so I also need some shop time next week to finish up a few items.

So I have a busy schedule for this next week. I will need another week just to recover before I return to work.

How about you all, what is going on in your Home Improvement, Woodworking world this weekend?

Time for a little show and tell.

I finally got the texture done on my hall bath yesterday and about 20 minutes ago finished putting on the primer. I hope to get the first coat of finish paint on tonight if things dry out fully. Then I am going to have figure out the baseboards and what my wife wants in there.

Two weeks ago I cut my left thumb on the tablesaw. Almost lost the tip just above the knuckle. Needless to say, my woodworking has been reduced to cleaning the shop. Not that it didn't need it, but it is just not as fun as actually working on projects. In addition i am thinking about rearranging my shop and adding some much needed safety equipment (splitter or riving knife).

ning-blanketchestpine13-40548-32.jpg?widThis goes to the artist next week to be painted. It will be a Pennsylvania style blanket chest. Drawer knobs come off. I might do black iron knobs, smaller, instead.

I also started a big tiger maple stepback cupboard. Got the ogee bracket feet molding done.

Tonight is a talk at the woodworkers guild on finishing. bob

Bruce,
I am glad that you are on the mend. I saw your shop when Tami and I were there awhile back, but I don't remember what kind of table saw you have. The particular brand/model may be a limiting factor for just what kind of after market splitter or riving knife you can put on it, Most of the major brands will work with the table throat insert snap in splitter and they can be picked up at your local Rockler/Woodcraft/etc. I have one for my Jet Contractor saw and it works well for those times when my primary splitter won't work for the specific cut. My primary one is the Biesemeyer splitter with anti-kickback prawls. I bought it sortly after I bought my saw about 10 years ago and I love it and it works well. It is a bit pricey at $130 and they carry them specifically for Delta and some Powermatic, Jet and Grizzly. It has been discontinued for the right tilt contractor saw like mine. These splitters are designed for full kerf blades only. But I switched over to thin kerf blades about 7 years ago or so as the lower power contractor saw works better with thin kerf blades. So I ground the thickness of the splitter down to fit the thin kerf blade thickness using my belt/disk combo sander. Yes it does void the warranty and is not recommeded, but it had been working fine for me.

Nice Bob...what is the wood for the case and drawer front? All the same?

Nothing worse than equipment problems.  Good luck, hope you get it resolved.

I will still be trying to get my blank chuck straightened out. Its in straight s far as I can tell with the naked eye but there is still some bit wobble. So i don't know if the whole drill chuck assembly is not meeting the wood right or if I have a warped bit etc.

I do know though that it seems as if both mandrels are wobbling just a tiny bit during use, but I just can't see the whole lathe being warped. Frustration is beginning to mount.

Looking forward to seeing the finished project!

Very sorry to hear about your accident.   Hope your thumb is feeling better.

Outstanding chest!  Hope you post a picture after it's painted.  Are those drawers at the bottom?  If so, very clever idea.

I love your "It's Friday" discussions.  Always fun to hear what everyone has on their agendas.

We are going to finish installing the Husky air compressor, clean the shop, work on moving a few pieces of equipment to more convenient locations, and getting everything a bit more organized.  We also plan to take pictures of some equipment we want to sell, and get them posted on craigslist.  We have no extra room for items we aren't using.  Most importantly, I plan to finish the bowl I currently have on the lathe using the new bowl sander!  :)

It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.

gonna go after a load of firewood tomorrow, maybe work on the heating system again for a while

The chest is white pine and the drawer fronts are soft maple. The 2 boards on the lid are stained curly maple. The bottom panels inside the chest and the drawer bottoms are quarter sawn basswood. The drawer sides are soft maple. The moldings and feet are white pine.

Ah, fall. Today we are headed out for a nice day at an Oktoberfest.

Finished a small cabinet for my wife and now it's clean-up the shop time. Oh and it was an all handtool project. ning-bedroomcabinet041-40537-41.jpg?widt

After waiting for some help for about week and half, finally got the back wall up for the new shed between the rain. So next week can get two walls up if the weather hold up.  Went thru some of the wood working magazines and re-read some articles and I'll be filing them away in my computer folder.  Went thru items I had for ideas for Christmas.  Now need to get list work up for lumber and either order some or check with the man and see what rough cut lumber he has.  Sunday be cleaning up the shop again.

Well, I got everything done in the bathroom this weekend that I wanted to get done. The texture went on first, then the primer and 2 coats of finish paint. Everything was cleaned up and I got the toilet tank put back on, put up  the new toilet paper dispenser, put up the new light fixture, and grouted the floor where the new tiles had been installed after the old vanity was removed. So tomorrow I hope to get the new vanity that I made installed with the re-worked plumbing so that it will be fully useable. Then I will have to get working on the basebards and crown, build a new wall mirror and a new mirror for the medicine cabinet in an Arts & Crafts style all out of red oak. Then I will have to make a couple of new picture frames out of red oak for the custom pastels that were done by a friend att church. So there are a few more weekends until the bathroom will be totally done, but phase 1 is almost done.
