September 19, 201114 yr Good Morning Friends,When you are buying lumber from the saw mill and after the wood is kiln dried you may buy the wood that is marked S3S.What does that mean in regard to the condition/shape of the wood?
September 19, 201114 yr   Surfaced 3 Sides.  Usually both faces, and ONE edge have been planed smooth.  'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
September 19, 201114 yr Oh........now why do I have to be different????I believe the term S3S is a catchall. Properly, it is surfaced 2 sides (with a big honk'n planer that typically does both top and bottom on one pass) (1st pass is H/M hit or miss 15/16"...2nd pass is 13/16" or 25/32" or 3/4")......then it goes to the straight line ripper to get the edge.......and after all that it is S2S R1E. (ripped 1 edge)There's actually more........but this answers the question.
September 19, 201114 yr I also agree with Steve.  I love these quizzes - very informative! SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
September 20, 201114 yr Author Good Morning All,S3S does in deed mean the face and back of the board is planed and ripped with the table saw to true up the edge for there is truly no need to rip the other edge because most likely the board will be ripped again time after time to get the desired parts for a project. SQ and all I am pleased that you find these quizzes informative for that is exactly my intention.Thank you all for your support.
