September 29, 201114 yr Just worked over a few more of those old rafters. They are a full 2" thick, by 4-3/4" wide.  Black as all get out.   And a few nails in them as well.Nasty, aren't they?  this is a "before" shot:and, after they clean up a bit. Ripped these down a bit, I'm trying to get about 2" wide, by 1" thick.  These appear to be some sort of Oak/Ash?  Nails turned the wood black where the nails were in the wood. One more end grain shot:Nice grain , but which wood is this FREE stuff?  'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
September 29, 201114 yr Author  This will be for Stove Sitter tray #3.   SST#2 is in the clamps right now.  Southern Yellow Pine for the Tray's "bottom" panel, with a handle set made of more of this "Rafter Wood".   SYP was in the form of another joist, about a "normal" 2x8x12'.  Might have picked up an order for a fourth one of these. We'll see.  'and may the road raise up to meet ye'
