By a standard rule of thumb, approximately how many board feet of lumber will you have in a pile of lumber with 48 pieces of 2 x 6 x 8' long?

  That would be 8 x 48,   About 384 bf.

You are 100% correct and the way to arrive to the sum you did was to multiply 48 x 2 x 6 x 8

                                                                                                      divided by      12         

 = 384 total board feet.
