October 17, 201114 yr Good Morning Friends,When framing in a hip roof how many common rafters or trusses will be in that hip installation?
October 18, 201114 yr Author Good Morning Jack,How true you are for one common in the middle of the structure gives the last common rafters/truss the bracing need to assure for good layout of the jack rafters/trusses.It is a rare site to see the Dutch hip roof and some might not know what you are referring to so I'll try to explain. A dutch hip roof is one where the ridge board extends past the last common rafters or truss and the framing member comes back to the rafters or truss mostly on a 45º angle extending the roof sheathing to give protection to the vent in the end wall in the case of a storm that could allow moisture into the attic. Other than that it offers no form of strength to the roof supports.
October 18, 201114 yr Ralph there are a few variation on the dutch hip so it is not fully accurate that a dutch has one common. the dutch Hip  variation of a standard hip with a small gable section at the peak is the one with a  hip ending on a common rafter . The small gable can provide an attractive alternative to the standard hip as well as provide room for additional ventilation. How to calculate a Dutch Hip would be a good question.  jack English machines
